How to use imovie. How to create videos and trailers with the iMovie app for iOS

Hi all! As promised, today's article will focus on iMovie, another popular Apple program from the iLife package. With it, you can view your videos, create movies, trailers, and more.

The concept of developers is based on the fact that all OS X applications have a very friendly interface and at the same time have all the necessary set of tools to effectively solve user problems. So if you've worked with other apps in the iLife suite before, the iMovie interface will feel very familiar to you. Let's start with him.

Metadata Panel

In the left part of the window there is a metadata panel, at the top of which there are links to photos, video files and projects. I must say right away that iMovie and are very closely interconnected, therefore, when choosing an item iPhoto library thumbnails of your photos will appear in the bottom panel of the program.

In the tab all events your video files imported into the program are displayed. tab all projects allows you to see all created projects. pressing iMovie Library also shows all program events, but in the form of a timeline, not thumbnails (as in the first screenshot).

As you create and edit your video projects, an additional tab will appear at the bottom of the metadata panel content library which includes: transitions; credits; cards and backgrounds; iTunes; sound effects and GarageBand. When you select any of these items, their contents will appear in the browser.

Explorer bar

Working with iMovie 10 is very similar to working with iPhoto. When you select any element of the library, its contents are displayed in the browser panel. For quick search the desired file, click on the arrows in the upper left part of the panel and select the required category.

By clicking on the thumbnail of the element you need, all information about it will appear in view panels. To view the contents of this element (in case it is an event or an album) double click on it and you will see all the images contained in it. Click on the heading to return events.

The browser panel also has a search function that depends on the selected category. That is, if you need to find a media file by the persons present on it, you need to select the category of the person, and then enter keyword. This process is similar for other categories.

Project panel

Your new project will be displayed as a sequential tape of frames to work with. In order to add an element to the project, you just need to select it or select the required time interval (if it is a video) and move it to the right place on the frame tape. Or press + (appears at the bottom right of the selected element) and the selected part will move to the end of the project. See screenshot.

If the tape of frames goes too far beyond the work area, then you can fix this by adjusting the zoom slider in the upper right part of the panel, thereby changing the time interval of each frame (for example, from 5 seconds per frame to 10).

Next to the zoom slider is a pop-up menu for adjusting clip sizes. In this menu, it is also possible to enable or disable the audio signal waveform located at the bottom of the clip, but it is better to leave it anyway, as it visually tells you where the audio track begins and ends.

Speaking of sound, at the very bottom of the project panel there is a platform in which you can place any audio file, thereby providing musical accompaniment to the future project.

View panel

The view panel is exactly the place where we get all the information about the media file, both visual and textual. For example, let's choose iPhoto library and then in browser panels select the event of interest to us. Now in view panels it will show how many photos, videos, faces and places in this event. Similarly, information about the video project and about all other media files of the program is displayed.

While working on a project, you can view your work from any moment, to do this, select a point on the timeline and hover over the viewing panel, here you can play the clip from this point, as well as open it in full screen mode and rewind using the back and forward buttons.

Toolbar

Working with iMovie 10 becomes even more comfortable due to the fact that there is no need to resort to the general menu (always located at the top of the screen, no matter what program is open), for this there is toolbar:

Import. By clicking this button you open the window for importing files into iMovie. By default, the objects you select are imported into updated projects. The place where to add new files can be changed in the drop-down list of the import window.

Create. Allows you to create a new movie or trailer using templates. I will cover this in more detail in my next articles.

Media Library and Theater. By default in iMovie 10, all projects and files appear in the Library. But you can also share your work with Theater, which is similar to iPhoto's photo stream. When you add files to Theater, they are available to all Mac or iOS devices that have latest version iMovie and linked to your Apple ID.

Improve. iMovie 10 itself offers its help to improve the image. Select a frame and click improve, depending on the quality of the clip, the program can correct the color saturation or optimize the contrast. If you are not satisfied with the improved version, then click this button again to cancel.

Tune. Here we can make a deeper configuration of our project, namely: color balance; color correction; truncation; stabilization; volume; equalizer, audio and video effects. I will talk about them in more detail in future articles.

Well, that's probably all about the main features of the program and its settings. In the future, we will learn how to work with iMovie 10 and .

It's time to think about adding a soundtrack or sound effects, adjusting the sound levels or recording your own sound for voiceovers.

Adding sound effects makes your movie feel less like a collection of video clips and more like a single project.

Soundtrack.

For background music, you can choose a soft theme from iMovie itself, or a song or track created in GarageBand or another app that's saved locally on your iPhone.

To add background music, click the "Media Library" button that was used to add the video clip to the timeline - it looks like a piece of film strip and a musical note. Select the "Sounds" tab at the bottom and you'll see a range of categories. Theme Music is a collection of soft audio tracks that come preinstalled with iMovie. If none of the topics strike your fancy, you can browse your iTunes library by playlist, album, artist, or song. And if you have tracks saved in iCloud Drive, tap the last item in the list to view folders in iCloud.

If you bought music from iTunes, Apple Music, Spotify, or another streaming service, you may encounter DRM restrictions that prevent you from adding songs to your iMovie project. I tried to download a track from Apple Music and use it as an iMovie soundtrack but was told the song was DRM protected and couldn't be used. When I bought the same song from iTunes, DRM protection it wasn't there anymore, and I was able to use it for my iMovie masterpiece.

When you search for songs for iMovie, the tracks that are discolored are either not stored locally or are protected by DRM. Tracks with a white header can be used. Click on a song to highlight it, and then click the arrow button to add it to the project timeline. You can also click the play button to preview the sound before adding it to your project.

If you have a video, song, or some audio that you would like to use as background music, you can extract the audio from the clip and add just that. Instead of selecting a video and clicking the down arrow button to add a video clip to your project, click the button on the right that looks like sound waves - this will add just the audio from the selected clip.

Sound adjustments.

When adding an audio track, you can trim its start and end points by clicking on the audio track and then dragging the yellow bars at both ends, as you would with a video clip. The audio clip depicted with a green bar is used as the background sound, and depicted with a blue bar is used as the foreground sound. You can switch between background and front tracks in the trim menu tools. Also in this menu is an option to split the audio track, which is useful for adding a cut clip or other effect during which the soundtrack should not be played. You can also split an audio clip by selecting its strip and then "breaking" it with your finger (as in Fruit Ninja).

You can also manually adjust both background and foreground sound levels by clicking on an audio clip or video clip, then clicking on the speaker button at the bottom and moving the slider. Also in this edit menu there is an option Fade, which allows you to make the sound level decrease or increase.

Sound effects.

iMovie offers a collection of various sound effects. It's doubtful that many of your iMovie projects will require ridiculous sound effects, but you should know that iMovie can help you with that too. When adding audio using the "Library" button, click on the "Audio" tab and then on "Sound Effects". Here you will find a long list of short audio clips.

Voice behind the scene.

If your movie project requires narration to explain something, you can record your speech right in the iMovie app to use as a voice-over. Move the playhead (vertical white line) to the location on the timeline where you want the voiceover to start (without having to select a specific video clip) and then press the microphone button. Next, click the "Record" button, and after a 3 second countdown, you can record your voice. Click "Stop" to end the recording.

Recorded clips appear as purple bars on the project timeline. You can perform the same audio adjustments as described above.

It is possible that a bunch of photos have accumulated on the hard drive that need processing or systematization. Or maybe you have a number of short videos from vacations or activities that can be combined into one good movie. But many do not know what program to use to make stunning content. To do this, Apple developers have worked hard to create a program called iMovie.

What is iMovie?

iMovie is a world famous video editor. This application is developed by Apple Inc., which first released it to the public in 1999. The program is designed for Apple products and is compatible with Mac, iPhone and iPad devices.

What is the program for?

In it, you can: trim the video, flip it, overlay a variety of your favorite music, add all kinds of special effects and save the result in digital format. In a word, to make your impressions and memories in video format - a masterpiece, a whole movie or a clip that you are not ashamed to show to your friends. Users love this program not only because it has many features and tools, but also because it is easy to use.

How to download and install

The download file size is approximately 1 GB.

We do not recommend using third-party unofficial sites or app stores to download this application, as they can, at best, provide an incorrectly working program with incomplete functionality, for example, and at worst, infect your device with viruses.

How to use iMovie on Mac, iPhone and iPad?

We pass to the most interesting - the use of the program. Here we will take a look at how to create a video, how to flip a video, start, vice versa, how to cut a video, how to speed up, slow down video playback, how to save a project, the resulting video, how to add, trim and overlay music on a track, how to change the voice, how to clear the media library and other important interactions with the program.

The interface of the program on Mac, iPhone, iPad is not much different, the icons and features are all the same. The example images in this article will be from the iMovie for Mac interface, but the steps to create a project will be the same on all devices.

Working with video

It's always a good idea to start editing files by uploading them to the application.

How to create a video

You can create several types of videos in iMovie: movie or trailer.

In order to start making a movie in the program, you must first add a video to it. Drop the finished video from a flash card or via a USB cable from a phone or camera.

  1. Next, add the desired video to iMovie.

While uploading the video, the user has the opportunity to select the following function in the menu that opens: "After importing, analyze". The program will reduce video shaking, stabilize it. In addition, iMovie will remember the moments in which people are present. If in the future such fragments are required for creation, then it will be easy to find them.

  2. After selection required video we start a new project.

Choose a project theme or, if you don't want to, leave the project without one. Before adding a video, write down the name, the resolution that will be in the end, the frame rate.

  3. After selection desired parameters click: "Create", here you will see the window of the project being created.
  4. To move from project to project, select the one you need in the media library.

Entire videos or parts of video frames are added to the project. To select the entire video, click on the clip while holding down the Shift key. Having selected only a part, hold down the mouse button on the part of the video that is in yellow brackets.

  5. You need to drag the video to that part of the working menu of the program, which is marked with a green rectangle with a plus sign.

In this way, all files that will later appear in the project are added.

  6. In addition to videos, you can add photos to Movie. To do this, drag the photo to the place in the current project where you want it to be. Insert pictures, possibly only between clips (on a vertical green line, on which a green plus sign appears when moving).

For the added photo, set the duration of its display in the project.

The signature feature of the program, the trailer, is a short video with a pre-selected plot in a special style, in which, like in the movie announcement, you can list the names of the characters, attach certain small fragments, and iMovie will automatically create the finished version.

How to flip a video, put it in reverse

Next important function- video rotation. To do this, click the arrow at the top of the program's desktop.

The image is rotated 90 degrees to the right or left. If black bars appear after rotation, it means that the video does not match the resolution (aspect ratio) that was originally selected. Therefore, to correct this discrepancy, you will need to truncate the video. The button for this is located in the upper left corner.

The reverse video playback feature can also be a nice feature in your project. To enable reverse playback, double-click on the video clip and select Reverse Direction.

How to trim video

The option is useful in that the user selects only the fragment of the movie of interest. Select the clip, click the trim icon.

A frame will appear. Adjust it to your liking. The information that is cut off will be a few shades darker than the information displayed at the end of the project - brighter.

If you suddenly change your mind about trimming the video and want to return it to its original state, click reset.

How to speed up or slow down video playback

Use the slider on the timeline to change the video speed.

Move left to right, slowing down or speeding up respectively.

You can also change the speed of a separate part of the video clip. Hold down the R key and move the mouse pointer at this moment, selecting a range on the timeline. Next, adjust the speed using the button in the form of a speedometer.

How to save a project

After that, the created movie will be in the selected folder.

Video: exporting a finished project

Working with music

The main features of the program when using audio files are described below.

How to add, overlay music on a track

One of the most requested functions in the program is the addition of background music, your favorite melody allows you to give the project a special mood, emphasize the meaning of the plot.

You can add music from the Music, iTunes, and other apps.

Send the desired melody to the dark gray field. If the timeline background turns green, it means that background music has been added to the movie. It will start playing immediately when you turn on the movie. If the song is longer than the video itself, it will still end playing when the video ends.

It is also possible to overlay several short audio sounds. In this case, the melodies will be played smoothly, with an influx of one second, in turn.

The melody can be assigned to any frame of the film, it should not be played necessarily first, but when the user wants.

By clicking "Action", the user will be able to change the background music volume.

You can add not only melodies, but also, if necessary, audio recordings, voice recordings.

How to trim music

"Clip trim" - this function will help you change the length of the background melody so that it starts to sound from the right moment. Cropping is done through the "Action" menu.

We select "Audio settings", after which we see in an enlarged form the sound wave, clamped by two yellow brackets. They symbolize the beginning and end of the melody, move them to the desired position, setting the start and end points.

If you need to listen to the audio trim you made, click Play, click the same button a second time to stop playback.

There is another tool for trimming background music. It's called "Wave Chart".

At the bottom of the video, the sounds and melodies that are present in the project will be displayed (blue - the sound of the video itself, green - the background music that you added, red - the voice). You need to select the sound you want to cut, yellow brackets will appear on it, move them to cut the sound wave.

How to change voice

The voice can be changed, if desired, to a rougher, gentler, more beautiful one. You can improve the quality of audio sound by overlaying a voice, for example, on an already created film, in which either the voice is heard poorly, or it turned out not the way you wanted.

Video: how to change the voice

It is possible to record audio while editing or creating a movie. In the "Voice over options" click "Mute Project Sound", then click the record icon (red circle).

What else can you do with the tracks in the program?

In the program, you can completely separate the audio from the video clip itself. This is done by changing the “Change” settings, in the settings menu, click: “Separate audio panel”.

After you have separated the audio track from the video, you can use it, for example, by adding it to another video project. It is convenient to use such a tool and get familiar phrases from famous films, and then add these recognizable phrases that are suitable for the topic to your project.

Another interesting effect is the rise and fall of sound.

On the timeline, on the audio track, a lever opens, moving which you can mark the point where the sound will fade in or out.

How to clear the media library

When viewing a project, delete junk files. To do this, by clicking on the project, select: "Delete project".

If you want to clear it completely and irrevocably, then select the file to be deleted and click Delete.

After that deleted files will be placed in the trash, from which these clips can be reviewed and restored or erased forever.

Copying effects and settings

The user has the opportunity to copy the settings on the scale and then paste them into another project. Click "Edit", then "Copy", all effects and results will be remembered, then use them by clicking "Edit", "Paste Settings". The program will prompt you to choose options:

All. This means that absolutely all effects are preserved.

  • Or one of the following settings: settings for color correction, contrast, illumination; video cropping settings; sound volume settings; adding one of the video effects, such as "sepia", or audio effects (such as "echo"); imposition of high-speed effects; video overlay effects (such as picture-in-picture).

iMovie Theater

iMovie Theater - a theater in which the user watches movies, trailers. Thanks to him do it at all Apple devices(linking programs to account iCloud).

To upload the file to iMovie Theater, in the clip's timeline, click Movie Theater. In the future, after changing the project itself, the changes are displayed in the theater (you just need to update the version of the project in the iMovie Theater program itself).

All iOS apps easy to use yet multifunctional. iMovie is no exception. Create video masterpieces easily and simply. Improve them, add all sorts of effects, enjoy watching with friends. This application, like the previous one, migrated to iOS from OS X, the authors retained the main ideas of the program and implemented touch control capabilities in the best traditions.

In contact with

When starting the program, we are greeted by a movie poster with posters of created projects. You can view or edit an existing one or create a new one. Projects are divided into two types: commercials and trailers. The first one creates a video without restrictions, and the second one makes a trailer according to a template.

When you switch to the workspace, you will see three windows. One of them is a kind of media content browser on the device. All material is located on three tabs "video", "photo" and "music". The preview window is located on the right, and the timeline occupies the lower part.
To Work with iMovie on touch screen pure pleasure. Dragging a video from the media library will bring it to the timeline. Start and end markers will quickly cut the fragment, and cut gestures (swipe down on the selected video) will cut the video in the right place. It is worth noting the swipe gesture from the bottom up - it creates a freeze frame.

In addition to videos, photos can also be transferred to the timeline. They can be static or mobile. To create a simple animation, you need to specify different positions for the snapshot at the beginning and end of its display on the timeline. You can change the position and zoom of the photo. You can customize the transition between parts of the video from several options. In a couple of touches, you can add subtitles or overlay sound. For the latter, except for the volume settings, nothing can be changed.
IN iMovie You can not only use the material that exists on the device, but also create your own. Special buttons allow you to quickly switch to recording a video or audio track.

There are not many settings and applications, but they set the theme of the video design. Each option has its own transitions between parts of the video and animation for titles. All templates are quite high quality and suitable for most types of videos.
As I said, in addition to videos, you can create trailers. These are original commercials or annotations for your future film or video report. Unfortunately, you will have to create the film itself without using templates from trailers. Initially, you should choose one of the proposed options, depending on the theme of the trailer and the number of actors. Right iMovie will offer to view the created video based on this template.

After proceeding to editing, you should specify the main parameters of the future masterpiece. You can change the name, names and roles of actors, the name of the film studio and the list of filmmakers. You can also change the animation of the appearance of the title and credits.
After that, you can move on to the storyboard. It is a panel with the necessary scenes for the trailer. The duration of each segment and the number of actors involved in it are indicated. A small preview will show what needs to be done in the frame. Between the videos there will be inserts with text that can be edited right there.
Creating a trailer can be great fun with friends or family. But the application itself iMovie will be a great companion for a novice video creator.
