“You need to increase the volume of your mailbox...”: preventing phishing attacks. Basic settings for mail programs Rambler mail maximum attachment size

Hello friends. An extremely important message for users Email Mail.Ru: under the guise of a letter from the service administration, you may receive a message with the title “ You need to increase the volume mailbox ..." The letter will ask you to increase the storage capacity for letters. Otherwise, new emails will supposedly not arrive due to lack of disk space. This is not a letter from the Mail.Ru administration, but ordinary phishing - a fraudulent scheme to deceive users in order to obtain their confidential data. In this case, the password for the Mail.Ru mailbox. Below we will look at this case in more detail, and also talk about other types of phishing attacks. And, of course, we’ll find out how to deal with all this crap.

“You need to increase the volume of your mailbox...”: preempting phishing attacks

So, friends, phishing is a fraudulent scheme to deceive people on the Internet. We spoke in detail about various fraudulent Internet schemes earlier. Phishing is head and shoulders above other schemes such as spam with delusional offers to get rich without doing anything. These are usually not clumsy, but trowel-made projects. Made on high level both technically and psychologically in terms of the use of manipulative techniques. Phishing involves imitating well-known brands or online platforms - email services, payment systems, trading platforms, other reputable exchanges. Email is most often used to implement phishing schemes. It is precisely this that, more than other Internet communications, makes it possible to put the skill of imitation into practice.

How do phishing attacks work? On behalf of well-known brands or Internet sites, we, users, receive a message by mail with a certain proposal or organizational issue, the solution of which requires confirmation of the mail password in a special form via a link. Well, this link form is nothing more than a resource for scammers, from where they will subsequently steal the password. Then they will enter the mailbox, change the password and rummage around there in search of something worthwhile - usually authorization data for accounts of payment systems and Internet banking. But they can also swindle our friends from the contact list out of money. Send them a message like:

“Give me so much money for such and such a wallet. Urgently!!! Got into big trouble. I'll tell you later".

So, friends, I received a phishing email in Mail.Ru.

Scamming mailbox holders

I received a letter from the sender at Mail.Ru [email protected], who called himself “[email protected]”. The letter says:

"To continue working account such and such (receiving, sending, storing letters and files) increase the mailbox capacity in your account settings, in the Settings: Mailbox capacity section. If the disk space is not increased, sending and receiving new emails will become unavailable in the near future.”

The level of skill in simulating messages from the real administration of Mail.Ru is amazing. Just as the very essence of manipulation is striking. See for yourself, friends.

If I had entered a password into this form, as one of my friends did, his fate would have awaited me. Fraudsters immediately entered his mailbox and changed his password. He was able to restore access to mail only after entering a reply to Security Question. Fortunately, the security question and answer in case of lost password were previously set up for his Mail.Ru email.

Using the same phishing scheme “You need to increase the size of your mailbox...”, not only Mail.Ru mailbox holders are scammed, but also users of other mail services. There are definitely known cases of sending the same letters to Yandex.Mail users from the sender supposedly Yandex.Disk.

The wording of the phishing letter, “You need to increase the volume of your mailbox...” is not the only manipulation with which scammers try to take over mailbox passwords. There are other options for playing on the same scheme, for example, a letter called “Account Suspension”, which states that you need to enter a password due to an alleged change in mail processing standards.

You are now a happy Chrome visitor...

And here, friends, is another fraudulent project with an imitation of a famous brand - Google browser Chrome. When working with it, a web page stylized as a browser pops up, which says:

“Dear Chrome user, today you are a happy visitor to such and such a date. Please fill out this short questionnaire and as a thank you we will give you a chance to win Apple iPhone X!

Next are several survey-style questions to improve quality. As a result, we will receive an offer to download the Trojan. This is also a phishing attack, but it does not come in the form of an email. Its triggering mechanism can be picked up online, on regular sites. The web page for such a prize draw settles in the Chrome profile cache and periodically pops up in the browser window. It is not detected by the antivirus and is usually missed by web protection, since it is a local script. However, the sites themselves where you can pick up such a script are included by the browser’s creators in the database of unwanted sites built into Chrome’s protection. When you try to visit a site where you can pick up Adware or other malware, you will usually see a flashy notification in the browser window that you should not visit such a site.

However, alas, before the site malicious code gets into the Chrome web protection database, someone will get hurt. Of course, if he believes in his chance to win an iPhone.

How to avoid falling for scammers

How to prevent phishing attacks and not suffer from the actions of scammers?

1. You cannot enter your email password into any forms on third-party resources, no matter how similar their design style is to the email service. The same applies to other sites. The administration of Internet services in their letters will never ask you to enter your account password for confirmation. The real administration, if necessary, can itself gain access to where it is needed. Changing your password, setting up security measures, and similar changes in your account should only be done in the settings section by going there using the interface menu, but not by following links in emails.

Fraudsters scamming Mail.Ru mail holders used their own XML script to imitate the mail service section.

But even the web address of a service can be imitated. Or rather, we can simulate what we see in the address bar of the browser. If you copy this address and paste it, say, into Notepad, you will see something completely different from what you see in the browser window.

3. Always report phishing attempts to service support.

4. Ensure that you regain access to your account: set up in advance the ability to change your password using a security (secret) question or confirmation using a telephone, another mailbox, or other means of communication. If the service allows, be sure to use two-factor identification - authorization with login confirmation via phone.

  • Note: friends, do you know what is included in the browser Google Chrome Do you now have your own means of combating certain types of game? Google has created standard tool to identify malicious extensions and software that changes user browser settings. To launch this tool, go to the settings section, enter the query “harm” in the search field, and click “Remove malware from your computer.”

If the tool finds something, it will offer to remove malicious files.

Do you have a lot of emails stored in your email that you really need and you can’t delete them? But at the same time, you understand that someday the time will come when your email will not be able to store the entire amount of information received and sent. Don't worry about this: if necessary, the box can be “stretched”.

Instructions

  • There is no such thing as bottomless email. There is a reasonable limit to everything. However, it is possible to “pump up” the box a little. Typically, after registering for email, the user receives mail with a specified volume. Each email has a different size, usually from one hundred megabytes to ten gigabytes.
  • The function of increasing mailbox capacity is present on almost all resources. The procedure for “paging” mail is almost identical. Although there are also differences.
  • For example, on Rambler the user is immediately provided with a box with a capacity of 200 megabytes. But it is impossible to increase it immediately. The fact is that the mail size can be increased only after the mailbox, along with received, sent, trash, drafts and spam, is 90 percent full. When only ten percent is left in the mail free space, the box can be enlarged by clicking on the corresponding button in the “Settings” menu. On the left in the list of possible functions, select “Drawer Size”, then go to the “Enlarge” option.
  • A truly dimensionless box can be created on the Yandex service. Initially, Yandex provides the user with 10 gigabyte mail. Subsequently, when less than two hundred megabytes remain free in the box, it will increase its volume. In this case, the user does not need to make any effort. As needed, the box will automatically increase by one gigabyte. The user only needs to log in regularly and go to the web interface of this mail service.
  • There is no bottomless box on the Mail.ru server either. But you can also increase it. Go to the "Settings" menu. It opens when you click on the “More” item. Then select the “Mailbox capacity” section in the list on the left of the page that opens. Follow the link and click the “Enlarge” button. Please note that you can “pump up” the size only if you have reached the limit and you have less than 100 megabytes left free. After this, you can increase the volume by another two gigabytes.
  • Other electronic servers provide similar expansion opportunities. The user’s actions are practically no different from the increase procedure on the services described in this article.
  • Currently, free email services have become very popular on the Internet. By registering with such a service, you receive a free mailbox, which you can work with either through the web interface or using a mail processing program, the so-called “mail client”.
    In this article we will look at several of the most popular Internet mail services, their features (if any) and provide the basic parameters of each service for setting up the operation of a mailbox with a local mail client, such as Outlook Express, TheBAT! etc. We will also try to answer the question whether it is possible to carry out any serious mass mailing through free postal services.

    MAIL.RU

    Let's start with the oldest mail service Mail.ru. After going through a simple and clear registration procedure, you receive a mailbox in any of four domains of your choice (mail.ru, inbox.ru, bk.ru, list.ru). The mailbox size is unlimited, initially equal to 10240 MB, as soon as your mailbox has less than 100 MB of free space, the volume can be increased by another 2 GB.
    The maximum size of the letter you send should not exceed 30 Megabytes, the number of letter recipients should not exceed 30.
    To configure local mail client via POP3 protocol use following parameters:

    • pop.mail.ru; port 110 (without encryption) or 995 (with SSL encryption)
    • smtp.mail.ru; port 25, 587 or 2525 (without encryption) and 465 (with SSL encryption)
    • , including login, "@" dog and domain (for example, [email protected]);

    The features of this service include the ability to use non-standard SMTP port 2525 (in addition to the standard 25 and 587) to bypass the prohibition of some Internet providers on outgoing TCP connections on port 25 and, alas, the complete lack of support for the IMAP protocol.
    The service does not declare restrictions on mass mailings. However, experimentally the following picture emerged:
    after sending 120 letters, there were significant delays in mail delivery (up to 40 minutes), after sending 182 letters, error 553 began to occur (the server does not want to transmit mail), which disappeared after some time (from 5 minutes to an hour) and appeared again after sending letters. After 2 days, restrictions continued to apply. The picture did not change much even after sending responses to the initial mailing (no more than 5 letters per hour). It is not advisable to use the free mail service Mail.ru, like any other free mail services, for any serious mailing.

    Yandex Mail

    In the Russian segment of the Internet, perhaps one of the most popular free email services is Yandex.Mail.
    Immediately after registration, the volume of the mailbox is 10 gigabytes. As soon as there is less than 200 megabytes of free space left in it, the mailbox will automatically increase by 1 gigabyte, provided that the user regularly logs in and logs into the Yandex.Mail web interface using a browser.

    Of particular note that for a newly created mailbox you should first allow the use of POP3 and (or) IMAP protocols in the Yandex.Mail web interface before you start working with this mailbox in the mail client. This feature, unfortunately, is a very common reason for failure to send and receive mail in an absolutely correctly configured email client! Be careful!

    So, here are the basic parameters for setting up an email program using the POP3 protocol:

    • Incoming message server POP3 server - pop.yandex.ru, port 110 (without encryption) or 995 (with SSL encryption)
    • Outgoing mail server (SMTP server) - smtp.yandex.ru; port 25 or 587 (without encryption) and 465 (with SSL encryption)
    • The username (login) on the POP server and on the SMTP server is, in this case, the first part of your email address to @yandex.ru, for example, if you registered a mailbox [email protected], then “myname” should be specified as the user name (without “@yandex.ru”)
    • In your account settings, you must specify that the outgoing mail server (or SMTP server) requires authorization;

    Basic parameters for

    • imap.yandex.ru, port 143 (without encryption) or 993 (with SSL encryption);

    The maximum message size is 30 Megabytes.

    To the features service, you should add so-called “one-time” addresses for your e-mail, which look like “your login + [email protected]”, for example, [email protected] or [email protected]. A message sent to this address will be sent to your mailbox. This feature can be useful in many cases where you don't want to share your real email address.
    Another feature- mail aliases (pseudonyms) of your mailbox in the domains @narod.ru, @ya.ru, @yandex.by, @yandex.com, @yandex.kz, @yandex.ua.
    You can enable and configure this feature in your account settings on the Yandex.Mail web server. Subsequently, you will be able to receive letters to the aliases you have configured. For example, you created an alias (alias) [email protected] And [email protected]. Letters sent to these addresses will arrive in your mailbox. More detailed information These possibilities should be searched in the appropriate section help system Yandex.Mail.

    The service also does not declare restrictions on the frequency of sending. During the experiments, it turned out that after sending 90 letters, error 550 occurred; in fact, after that it was possible to send no more than 4 letters per hour. The delivery time for letters did not decrease.
    After 2 days, restrictions also continued to apply. On the 3rd day, after generating return letters possible speed deliveries to new addresses exceeded 80 letters per hour and remained this way for at least a day.

    Rambler.ru

    Another free email service provides search portal Rambler.ru. Mailboxes in the domains @rambler.ru, @ro.ru, @lenta.ru, @myrambler.ru and @autorambler.ru are available for registration. The initial volume of the box is 500 Megabytes (in fact it turned out to be equal to 512 Megabytes). It can be increased in stages up to 1500 Megabytes. Increasing the volume of the box is possible when the amount of free space is less than 10%.

    The parameters for setting up an email client using the POP3 protocol are as follows:

    • mail.rambler.ru, port 110 (without encryption) or 995 (with SSL encryption);
    • mail.rambler.ru, port 25 or 587 (without encryption or STARTTLS encryption) and 465 (with SSL encryption);
    • The username (login) on the POP server and on the SMTP server is full name of your mailbox, including login, "@" dog and domain (for example, [email protected]);
    • In your account settings, you must specify that the outgoing mail server (or SMTP server) requires authorization;

    The settings of the mail program using the IMAP protocol are identical, with the exception of the incoming message server:

    • Incoming message server IMAP server - mail.rambler.ru, port 143 (STARTTLS encryption) or 993 (with SSL encryption);

    Unencrypted IMAP connections are prohibited in this service. Features of the settings include the requirement for the contents of the “From:” field of the letter: the email address you specified in the mail client settings must match the username with which you log in to the SMTP server.
    The size of files that can be attached to a letter is limited to 20 megabytes.

    GMAIL.COM

    Mail service of the GOOGLE search engine. The new mailbox has a size of 7659 Megabytes without the possibility of expanding the space (at least the author of the article was unable to find any information about expanding the space for mail in the service’s help system). Only the gmail.com domain is available for registration.
    With Gmail, you can send and receive messages up to 25 megabytes in size. Maximum amount recipients in a letter sent through the mail program are limited to 100 addresses, and through the web interface - 500 addresses.
    The features of this service include only encrypted connections via the POP3, IMAP and SMTP protocols (and even on port 25 a secure connection is used).
    Please pay Special attention note that, as in the case of Yandex.Mail, before using a mailbox on gmail.com in an email program, you must first allow the use of POP3 and (or) IMAP protocols in the account settings in the web interface on gmail.com!

    To configure an email program using POP3 protocols, use the following parameters:

    • Incoming mail POP3 server - pop.gmail.com, port 995 (with SSL encryption);
    • Outgoing mail SMTP server - smtp.gmail.com, port 25 or 587 (STARTTLS encryption) and 465 (with SSL encryption);
    • The username (login) on the POP server and on the SMTP server is full name of your mailbox, including login, "@" dog and domain (for example, [email protected]);
    • In your account settings, you must specify that the outgoing mail server (or SMTP server) requires authorization;

    The settings of the mail program using the IMAP protocol are identical, with the exception of the incoming message server:

    • Incoming message server IMAP server - imap.gmail.com, port 993 (with SSL encryption);

    Another feature of gmail.com is that certain types of files are prohibited from receiving and sending, namely files with the extensions: “ade”, “adp”, “bat”, “chm”, “cmd”, “com”, “cpl”, "exe", "hta", "ins", "isp", "jse", "lib", "mde", "msc", "msp", "mst", "pif", "scr", "sct ", "shb", "sys", "vb", "vbe", "vbs", "vxd", "wsc", "wsf", "wsh". Moreover, such files are not accepted (or sent) even inside archive files. However, if necessary, this limitation can be circumvented by placing such files in a password-protected archive.

    We will also welcome your feedback and comments! Thank you!
