Tablets asus memo pad. ASUS Memo Pad Smart Equipment

The Taiwanese company ASUS continues to develop a line of budget tablets MEMO Pad. Last year, the company released the first two devices from this series - a ten-inch Smart 10” (ME301T) and a very simple seven-inch ME172V with a TN matrix and a single-core processor. The first gadget was quite successful, but the younger one was not very good. We didn't even write about it.

It's time to make amends. This year, at Computex, the company updated both the older model, which received a high-resolution screen and an Intel Atom processor, and the younger one, which today's material is dedicated to. Compared to its predecessor, the MEMO Pad HD 7 has more than enough differences - now it's really a full-fledged tablet, which costs quite a bit, but at the same time proudly bears the ASUS logo on the back panel.

⇡ Appearance

The exterior of the tablet betrays its low cost: the gadget is quite well-fed - its thickness, taking into account the protruding rim of the rear camera, is a little more than a centimeter - and the design of the case as a whole is devoid of any frills. A typical seven-inch Android tablet.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - front panel

There are no navigation keys on the front of the tablet. The buttons "Back", "Menu" and "Home" standard for the operating system are software buttons, they are located directly on the screen. At the top of the panel is the front camera lens.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 full face

The location of the controls on the tablet is quite familiar. The power and volume buttons are located on the top of the device, the micro-USB interface and 3.5 mm audio jack are placed on the left side. The headphone jack is not the best location - during operation, it is for this place that you want to grab your hand. The memory card slot is placed on the bottom end.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - sides

The back panel of the tablet is made of plastic, and not the most durable. The “back” of the MEMO Pad HD 7 scratches easily, and gets dirty rather quickly. The panel is glossy, not textured, however, despite this, the tablet does not strive to slip out of hands. On the back side of the device is the lens of the main, five-megapixel camera and the slot of the external speaker.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 is assembled quite well. During testing, we did not find any critical backlash. The plastic creaks a little when the case is squeezed, but we are already used to it. On sale, this tablet can theoretically be found in different colors: white, pink, light green, dark blue and dark gray.

ASUS MEMO Pad HD 7 - various colors

The front side will be black in any case, and only the color differs back panel. Interestingly, the first three of the listed versions have glossy backs, but the last two have matte ones. So this tablet will also suit those who appreciate practical design - they just need to pay attention to dark colors.

ASUS, without any doubt, is one of the trendsetters in the tablet market. At the same time, the devices of this manufacturer not only delight with advanced technical characteristics, but also traditionally deserve praise for their design. Initially, ASUS focused on the top segment, releasing one flagship after another. However, last year the strategy was changed.

First (in the spring) a line of cheaper transformer tablets (budget versions of the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer Prime) appeared on sale, in the summer ASUS released the Nexus 7 tablet under the Google brand, which cost $ 199 abroad. And this year, the company has already announced two budget tablets under its own brand: a seven-inch and a ten-inch (also known as the Memo Pad 10). The first costs $149 in American retail, the second costs $299.

The seven-inch Memo Pad came into our hands first. In Russia, it will go on sale at the end of February and will cost 7,000 rubles. How this device corresponds to the requested money, and how it compares with the Nexus 7 and budget tablets from other manufacturers, we will try to understand this article.

First, let's look at specifications device and compare it with competitors.

Specifications

ASUS Memo Pad has a lot of competitors: these are budget 7-inch tablets from smaller manufacturers, and such sensational models as Apple iPad mini, Amazon Kindle Fire HD, Barnes & Noble Nook HD and Google Nexus 7. True, iPad mini is still costs significantly more, and Amazon and B&N tablets are not officially delivered to Russia. Therefore, we decided to compare the ASUS Memo Pad primarily with the Google Nexus 7 (whose manufacturer, by the way, is the same ASUS).

Among tablets from lesser-known manufacturers, we chose the recently tested Prology Evolution Tab-750. Other vendors have similar models, but we chose this option because we were able to get to know it personally.

** - Recommended price for ASUS Memo Pad and Google Nexus 7 tablets.

Well, our today's hero definitely loses the comparison with the Nexus 7. The only parameter in which the ASUS Memo Pad is better than the Nexus 7 is the presence of a card slot microSD memory. However, the cost of Memo Pad is 3000 rubles lower. But the Nexus 7 has twice the amount of flash memory (9990 rubles is asked for a model with 16 GB of memory), and the screen and SoC are definitely better in terms of performance.

With Prology, the difference in characteristics is not so great: in terms of SoC, memory size and OS version, these tablets are about the same level. However, Prology has a screen on IPS matrix, while ASUS has a TN display, a rear camera (albeit a very mediocre one) and an HDMI output. And the price is lower. Here full list device characteristics.

  • SoC VIA WM8950 @1 GHz (1 core, ARM Cortex-A9)

However, do not draw premature conclusions. First, it's worth getting to know the ASUS Memo Pad better.

Equipment

The tablet came to us for a test in a nice box, decorated in the corporate style of ASUS.

Complete set - the most modest: nothing but charger it was not found in the box (besides the tablet itself, of course). We believe that there will be some more user manuals in the commercial copy.

Design

When you take the tablet in your hands, you immediately pay attention to its mass. By the standards of 7-inch tablets Memo Pad is heavy (370 grams versus 300-310 for many competitors). At the same time, the back cover is entirely made of plastic, so the large mass of the device is all the more incomprehensible.

The front view is standard and unremarkable. But the rear surface is interesting in an unusual color - crimson (we are talking about a copy that came to us for testing; black and white colors are also available).

The texture of the surface is also unusual: it is corrugated, matte. Feelings when you hold the tablet in your hands are unusual - for an amateur. But from a practical point of view, this can be a plus: during active use (for example, in 3D games), your hands will sweat less, even if the tablet gets warm.

Nevertheless, we repeat, the back cover is made of ordinary plastic, and this, in our opinion, is not very good, although it can be explained by the desire to make the cheapest possible product.

If you hold the tablet vertically (with the ASUS inscription down), then on the bottom we will see a USB connector for connecting to a computer and recharging, as well as a slot for microSD memory cards.

On the top edge there is a 3.5 mm headphone jack, as well as a hole for the built-in microphone.

Another microphone hole can be seen on the right side of the device. And on the left side we will find power button and volume rocker.

In general, the placement of connectors and buttons seems logical and convenient; in addition, the use of Micro-USB for recharging (rather than a proprietary connector) is pleasing. And what upsets is the lack of an HDMI output, which is so familiar in tablets of the lower price segment.

As for appearance ASUS Memo Pad, the tablet attracts the eye due to its unusual coloring, but does not give the impression of a branded high-end device. Next to the noble iPad mini, BlackBerry PlayBook and even quite pleasant, though not delightful Nexus 7, the new ASUS Memo Pad tablet looks rustic.

Screen

All previous ASUS tablets that we tested had an IPS screen. Memo Pad is equipped with a cheaper TN-matrix. How does this affect image quality?

Detailed screen examination using measuring instruments held by the editor of the sections "Monitors" and "Projectors and TV" Alexey Kudryavtsev. Here is his conclusion.

The screen of the tablet is covered with a glass plate with a mirror-smooth surface and, judging by the reflection of bright light sources in it, does not have an anti-glare filter. There is an oleophobic (grease-repellent) coating on the outer surface of the screen, so fingerprints do not appear as quickly as in the case of ordinary glass, but are removed more easily. The surface of the matrix itself (under the glass) is slightly matte, but there is no visible “crystalline” effect.

With manual brightness control, its maximum value was 270 cd/m², the minimum was 70 cd/m². As a result, even at maximum brightness in bright daylight, it will be difficult to see anything on the screen, and the minimum brightness will allow you to comfortably work with the tablet even in complete darkness. There is no automatic brightness adjustment, there is no flickering of the backlight at low brightness.

This tablet uses a TN-type matrix, as a result, the screen has good viewing angles in the horizontal direction, but even with a slight vertical deviation upwards (in portrait orientation of the screen), dark shades are inverted, and when deviated downwards, light shades are inverted. Such an orientation of the matrix (as well as the location of the logo and the camera) indirectly indicates that the manufacturer intends to use the tablet for reading books, and not for watching movies. The uniformity of the black field is average, since there are areas with increased brightness of the black field along the screen borders. The response time for the black-white-black transition is 19 ms (16 ms on + 3 ms off). The transition between halftones of 25% and 75% (according to the numerical value of the color) takes a total of 35 ms. For the gamma curve constructed from 32 points, the exponent of the approximating power function turned out to be 2.06, which is slightly lower than the standard value of 2.2, while the real gamma curve slightly deviates from the power dependence:

The contrast is not very high - 680:1. Color gamut narrower than sRGB:

Apparently, the matrix filters slightly mix the components to each other. The spectra confirm this:

This technique allows you to increase the brightness of the screen at the same energy costs for backlighting, but as a result, the colors on the screen look less saturated than they really should be. The color temperature of the white field is above the standard 6500 K, and it rises rapidly as you move towards darker hues. Delta E (deviation from the blackbody spectrum) has an acceptable value for the white point, but, like the color temperature, this parameter changes noticeably from the light part of the gray scale to the dark:

The result is disappointing: a dim screen with a TN-matrix, which has a narrow color gamut and a mediocre color balance. Well at least there is an oleophobic coating.

Operating system and software

The tablet comes with operating system Google Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich). It's strange that it's not Android 4.1.

The operating system has been slightly modified: ASUS developers have added an additional button to the bottom panel, which provides fast access to special widgets tied to applications. Their set can be changed.

Note also the "exclusive" ASUS settings, allowing, in particular, to set the performance level of the tablet (the higher the performance, the less time battery life).

As for the pre-installed software, here it should be noted the ASUS Studio viewer, AudioWizard sound profile set, MyPainter drawing and collage application, SuperNote Lite note-taking application, MyLibrary Lite reader, and the App Locker utility for setting application passwords.

In general, one cannot but admit that ASUS treated the tablet software carefully, but it is not clear why an outdated version of the operating system was chosen.

Platform and Performance

Most ASUS tablets run on NVIDIA Tegra 3 single-chip system (SoC). The exception is the devices of the ASUS Padfone line and the 3G version of the ASUS Transromer Pad Infinity (they contain Qualcomm SoC). Memo Pad has now been added to the list of exceptions. It is equipped with SoC. The reasons for this are obvious: the desire to minimize the cost. WM8950 is a budget solution from VIA (more precisely, its WonderMedia division), which is famous for the history of releasing its own x86 processors (“glorious” here should be read strictly in the sense of “known”) and has been integrating components for a long time, but today it is unlikely can be considered a serious competitor in the ARM tablet market to such companies as NVIDIA, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments…

However, let's not get upset ahead of time and look at how this SoC will show itself in benchmarks.

The first one we will have is Quadrant Standard. The result is mediocre: 2102 points. Google Nexus 7 in the same test scored 3594 points, and even the Prology Evolution Tab-750 on the budget SoC Allwinner (Boxchip) A10 was able to slightly overtake the Memo Pad.

In the browser test SunSpider 0.9.1, through which we run absolutely all tablets that have been in the edition, Memo Pad, having passed the test in 2300.6 ms, again lost to Nexus 7, but won against Prology.

Go ahead. In AnTuTu Benchmark, which tests the performance of all system components, the alignment was repeated. Our hero showed an average result: 4649 points, which is more than two times inferior to the Google Nexus 7, but slightly more than the Prology.

But Geekbench 2 and SuperPi worked on the tablet, alas, incorrectly. So the processor performance remains to be judged by the above tests.

As for GPU performance, we tested it using Nenamark 2 and the new Epic Citadel test for us.

The result in NenaMark 2 was mediocre: 26.1 fps. Prology has a little more, and the Google Nexus 7 has a generally incomparable result (it is two and a half times better than the Memo Pad).

Epic Citadel is a new benchmark in our methodology, so we did not test Google Nexus 7 in it, but we still consider it necessary to present the results for ASUS Memo Pad. The usefulness of Epic Citadel is explained by the fact that it demonstrates the game scene on the real Unreal engine, on which many popular games are made (Dark Meadow, Horn, Infinity Blade II, etc.). Therefore, the result that the tablet will show in this test will indicate how much you can play 3D games on the Unreal engine on this tablet.

Memo Pad showed a result of 18.5 fps. This is slightly more than the Prology (16.4 fps), but still far from the values at which one could say that the tablet can really play games of this kind.

So, our tests have shown that the performance of the system based on the VIA WM8950 chip, on which the ASUS Memo Pad runs, roughly corresponds to the level of ultra-budget tablets. This is quite enough for the smooth operation of the OS interface, but it will be problematic to play 3D games from 2012 and newer.

We also checked the compatibility of this SoC with a number of popular games.

The result is decent. But we emphasize that in this case we are not talking about the performance of games, but only about the very fact that they can be installed on the tested device.

Video playback

The tablet, alas, is not equipped with an HDMI video output, so it will not work as a media player. As for watching videos on the tablet itself, it makes sense to play only files with a resolution of 720p or lower - at a screen resolution of 1024 × 600, Full HD files will be useless.

To check the playback of video files, we used the recently developed by the editors of the site method for testing video playback and display devices. Among other uses, it is designed to check the correct operation of mobile devices with popular video file formats on the web. Accordingly, if mobile device correctly plays our video files, you will most likely not have any major problems when using this device to watch videos.

As you can see, there were no problems with the video, but the sound could not be reproduced by hardware. Therefore, we recommend installing MX Player in order to be able to programmatically play audio.

Autonomy and ergonomics

In terms of battery life, the tablet shows average performance. The test results (in all cases we set the screen brightness to the maximum) are shown in the table.

So, ASUS Memo Pad loses to Google Nexus 7, is much inferior to iPad mini in terms of battery life in reading mode, but significantly outperforms the budget Prology Evolution Tab-750.

If the screen brightness is set to an average level (comfortable for use in a not very well-lit room), then the result will be better: the tablet can play YouTube videos up to 6 hours and 40 minutes.

During active use, the tablet body heats up, but not so much that it causes any discomfort or causes concern for the safety of the device.

cameras

The tablet is equipped with a single video camera - front. It is located on the short side in the center, and therefore, when video calling, it is desirable to hold the tablet vertically. The resolution of the camera when taking photos is 1 megapixel, but when transmitting video, the resolution can be up to 720p.

Alas, we were unable to use the camera during Skype conversations: the video did not turn on in any way (we pressed the camera button in the Skype interface, but to no avail), and the interlocutor (he used a MacBook Air) had the video icon simply inactive during the call. However, the sound was transmitted normally.

To speak seriously about the quality of the resulting photographs and to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of the camera in camera mode, we here consider it obviously unnecessary.

conclusions

ASUS has released its first truly budget tablet, deciding to compete with many lesser-known manufacturers who, by purchasing components in China or simply branding finished Chinese devices, today almost completely occupied the lower price segment. And most likely, the cost of their products will in any case be lower than the cost of an ASUS tablet (and it consists not so much of the cost of components, but of the payment for the work of employees). However, ASUS has other advantages: brand reputation, the ability to support its new product with a massive advertising campaign and present it as widely as possible in retail outlets. Obviously, the success of ASUS Memo Pad will depend primarily on how successfully the company will be able to take advantage of the above benefits.

The tablet itself gives the impression of a device, in the production of which they tried to save on everything they could. A plastic case, a mediocre screen, a filling that is weak even by the standards of budget tablets, the lack of an HDMI output, an outdated version of the operating system ... Unless the battery life is acceptable. Yes, and with stability order. The American price ($149) for such a set looks quite adequate. But the Russian one (7,000 rubles) is not very good. For less money, you can buy a much more advanced device from second-tier manufacturers from us, and by paying three thousand rubles you can get a fundamentally more worthy and high-quality Google Nexus 7. What can we say about seven-inch tablets from Amazon, Barnes & Noble and BlackBerry, which today can be ordered from abroad for about the same 7,000 rubles (including shipping), or even cheaper.

Considering all this, ASUS Memo Pad can be recommended to those buyers who want to purchase a seven-inch tablet of a well-known brand officially sold in Russia, but for minimal money. If you have exactly such wishes, and you are ready to put up with the shortcomings of the device described by us, then include ASUS Memo Pad in the list of candidates for purchase.

Recently, our test lab received one of the new products from ASUS - MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X). We have already given an overview of this tablet in ours, and now we are ready to provide you full review this device.

Below are screenshots of ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 CPU-Z tablet

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Design

Here the tablet can only be praised, this is not a typical black nondescript case, but quite a decent looking device - a strict black front and white plastic with a relief in the form of a company name on the back side. All the main elements are also located there - the rear camera at the top (in portrait orientation), the micro-USB port and audio output on the upper end, the micro-SD card slot on the left side, the stereo speakers on the bottom, the volume rocker and the power button on the right. Traditionally for devices from ASUS, the company logo is duplicated under the screen in gray letters. Of course, we didn’t get anything revolutionary, but there are significant differences from the usual and boring design.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Software

ASUS has always taken this point seriously, a large number of branded applications were a "trick" of all devices. The most useful ones are ASUS Artist (a simple “drawing tool” like Paint), Splendid (different modes of the graphic screen matrix), Studio (application for working with photos), To-Do (scheduler) AudioWizard (application for setting the sound playback mode), WebStorage (similar to Google Drive and Yandex.Disk, designed specifically for ASUS users), Story (creating and editing notes to photos). We also note the large number third party applications– Amazon Kindle, App Backup, App Locker, Buddy Buzz, Zinio. Of course, there are not enough readers, Google Books and Press Reader cannot serve as a worthy and full-fledged replacement, and it would not hurt to add games too, although everything here is at the discretion of the user. Apparently, the company decided to completely give you the choice. On the other hand, there are many utilitarian applications that are very useful in everyday use, so we still think that everything is fine here.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Settings

As usual, we were not offended in the choice of settings, everything you might need is here. It is also worth noting the unusual design - instead of the usual black and white, there are different shades of gray, due to the lower contrast it is more convenient to use in the dark.

In settings wireless networks we can see support for WPS - direct connection to the router "in one click", as on the previously tested e-book. Also, the tablet can work with WiFi Direct and supports intelligent power consumption system in sleep mode.

Of particular note is the possibility sharing Internet connection of your PC when the tablet is connected via a USB cable. This is different from the usual use of the tablet as a modem, but given that this model does not have a 3G module, then it looks quite logical if it is not possible to receive the Internet directly from the tablet via Wi-Fi.

ASUS Personalized Settings contains many useful options for everyday use. For example, by long pressing the button of the recent applications, you can put a screenshot and choose the format in which it will be saved. In addition, you can choose ASUS' own notification panel instead of the standard one, which we found to be more convenient than the stock one.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Browser

The built-in browser works well and is fast. There is support Flash Player 11 and HTML5. Thanks to this, you can easily watch videos in the browser, high transfer speed WiFi data will also allow you to watch movies in streaming. Thanks to the high screen resolution, even small text is comfortable to read, so you will not have the problems that arise when using low-resolution matrices, when reading text requires a lot of imagination.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Music

To listen to music, only one application is preinstalled - Play Music. It supports sorting by albums, shuffle playback, as well as search by downloaded tracks, which will allow you to quickly find your favorite music instead of searching through all the tracks.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Video

Since April 2013, we have been using a new testing methodology for testing multimedia devices. It is divided into several parts.

  • Popular formats- Common video formats and codecs. Their support is recommended to be evaluated first of all
  • images DVD discs and Blu-ray— checking the playback of full DVD/Blu-ray images, including menus. Recommended if you store your media library as images
  • Rare formats- less common formats, but still relevant
  • Ultra HD 2K and 4K— formats with an eye to the future. In 2013, ultra-high-definition video will gain popularity

The results of video testing with a regular player leave much to be desired, the manufacturer should seriously think about this issue. Apparently ASUS decided that you can always put another player.

You cannot do without installing a third-party player, which we recommend doing. After installing MX Player and codecs for it, almost all formats were played, except for the heaviest videos. The table shows the results with MX Player installed

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Camera

The camera of this tablet deserves a separate and detailed consideration. The manufacturer has added many software features that allow you to take pictures High Quality even in difficult conditions. From the main settings - ISO change, focus mode, auto exposure, flicker reduction mode on monitors. Separately, exposure, photo resolution and aspect ratio (default 5 MP and 4:3), camera effects (vintage / grayscale / negative, etc.), camera mode selection are available for adjustment. The most useful modes here are "Bright" and "Night". As you might guess, the first one is for shooting bright objects, like a lamp or a candle, and the second one is for night shots. For the latter, you need to keep the tablet motionless while shooting, since the shutter is open for several seconds, and otherwise the picture will be very blurry, but despite this, even if the hands "walked" a little, the quality is still high. The front camera does not work wonders, but it fulfills its characteristics quite adequately. Below you can see examples of photos and videos taken with the tablet's camera.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Performance

CPU performance

We tested the performance of the 4-core Cortex A9 processor of the ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 tablet using Linpack. Results are in millions of floating point operations per second (MFLOPS).

Despite the quad-core processor, the results are slightly worse than even dual-core systems, so in applications that are demanding on the processor (office, etc.), be prepared for the fact that the work may not be ideal. Although the usual applications tablet ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 copes without problems.

Overall system performance

We used Smartbench 2012 1.0 to evaluate overall system performance. This test is very similar to the 3DMark and SysMark packages, as it provides simple and convenient performance indexes for two categories: productivity applications and games. On the other hand, a synthetic test may not accurately reflect the actual performance of applications and games.

You can compare your tablet scores with other smartphones and tablets at http://smartphonebenchmarks.com/

Similar to the Linpack benchmark, system performance is on par with dual-core systems, while graphics benchmarks are on par with quad-core tablets, which is what we expected as the tablet has a PowerVR SGX544 GPU, as found on many other popular 4-core models.

JavaScript Performance

SunSpider is a JavaScript test that demonstrates both the performance of the tablet's JavaScript engine and the processing power (to a lesser extent) hardware. Poor implementation of JavaScript on a very fast tablet can "blur" the overall performance of the platform. And at the same time, a great implementation of JavaScript will allow you to effectively use even slow systems. However, today the main implementations of JavaScript engines are getting closer to each other, developers are borrowing all the best ideas. JavaScript tests are single-threaded due to the nature of browsers. SunSpider correctly evaluates CPU-sensitive tasks found in real web applications.

Below are the results of SunSpider 1.0 on tablets and Android phones. Android devices use the Google V8 JavaScript engine.

The results are not record-breaking, although they are within the normal range. Significant script execution time is typical for tablets without optimization or with weak hardware, so we advise you to use a more modern or lightweight browser.

AnTuTu

We have added the results of the popular AnTuTu test. It has regular updates, the current version at the time of the review is 4.1, the results of 4.x do not match with 3.x, so we have presented only those tablets in which the new version has been tested.

As can be seen from AnTuTu results, the tablet does not set records, by no means can it be said that it is a quad-core tablet. On the other hand, chips from MTK provide lower power consumption, so you can hope for a longer battery life than Rockchip tablets with the same performance.

Relative Benchmark

This test was created “for growth”, no available Android devices can show really high results. The level of graphics is much higher than the average game, so even if the results here are not impressive, in real games the performance can be quite good. 60 fps in this test is already Xbox 360.

The results are low, although “creeping” from zero to a tangible value, after all, 5.5 FPS is at least something. However, you are unlikely to succeed in playing serious shooters, the game turns into a slide show.

Network bandwidth

We tested network performance with the IxChariot benchmark as well as an 802.11 b/g/n router with 1 Gbps ports. The tablet was at a distance of about 1 meter from the access point. We tested the maximum available network mode (802.11g or 802.11n), at that time there were no other active transmissions, no pronounced interference in the network coverage area was detected either.

The network bandwidth is average, but I would still like a higher level than 15 Mbps. Although this speed will be enough, for example, to watch streaming video.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Game tests

The results in tests do not always correspond to real performance, so we decided to conduct tests in real conditions.

Three applications were selected for this:

  • Cut The Rope is a casual game with simple and beautiful animation
  • Epic Citadel - demo of the Unreal engine with a built-in benchmark
  • NFS Most Wanted is a modern game with "powerful" graphics

These tests test performance under various conditions and allow you to evaluate real-world performance.

In games, frames per second (fps) is an important factor. The higher it is, the smoother the game is perceived. Frame rates below 30 fps can result in stuttering and other annoying effects. Frame rates below 15 fps turn the game into a slideshow, you can hardly enjoy it. We took the average frame rate during the test run in the selected game.

cut the rope

We decided to test the tablet on the usual casual games that many users play in order to have a good time. Since the user can play them for hours, a good frame rate per second (fps) is an important indicator, because not everyone can watch a jerky picture for many hours. We tested the tablet on Cut the Rope HD.

The results are not bad, but they cannot be called remarkable, we hope that the tablet will behave adequately in more serious tests.

Epic Citadel

We have added the Epic Citadel game test, which is a demonstration of the capabilities of the Unreal engine from Infinity Blade for Android OS. The test has different .apk and cache for different GPUs, so you need to take your versions for the test. The test was conducted only in High Quality mode. We excluded the High Performance mode from the tests, since the results differ slightly, and we are interested in the performance of the tablet relative to other models. You can see the results below.

The results are not bad, we can say that it will be comfortable to play games on the Unreal engine. 23 fps in Ultra High is, of course, not 50 fps in High, but it is also quite enough for an acceptable game.

Need for Speed: Most Wanted

To test the performance of "heavy" and demanding games, we chose NFS: Most Wanted. To install this game, you have to download the cache for each device separately, it was not possible to find something common for devices even with the same GPU, and the cache itself "weighs" 2 GB, an archive of 600 MB is downloaded. Therefore, get ready for the fact that you won’t be able to play immediately after installation, you will have to pump out the cache.

The results are very high, higher than anything we've had before. However, the previous leader used the same GPU, so similar results could be expected.

In general, according to the results of gaming tests, we can say that you can play almost everything, except for very heavy games. But you can run into trouble in the form of a lack of optimization of the game for the tablet GPU - the tests show that the results are very different from the usual proportions.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Battery life

We tested the tablet for battery life in various usage scenarios. Since the screen brightness is low and the sound in the speakers is quiet, we measured at maximum brightness and maximum sound in headphones. WiFi was on.

The results are very high, to be honest, even higher than we expected. The only drawback is that charging is performed only from USB, but even in this mode it goes quite quickly. Many "budget" competitors on the market give half the battery life and even lower, so we were pleased with the results. You can take the tablet on a trip and not be afraid that it will be discharged on the way. Unless, of course, you play something heavy at maximum brightness, but just reading a book or watching a movie on the tablet is enough for half a day. The tablet lay in standby mode for almost a week and was only half discharged, so it is not necessary to turn it off. With Wi-Fi turned on, it lay until discharged for three days, so even in this mode it is not necessary to turn it off to save battery.

ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7 (ME173X) | Conclusion

According to the test results, the tablet performed well. ASUS once again convincingly proved that it can make not only premium devices, but also excellent budget models. Moreover, the low price is achieved through quite acceptable compromises - it is not associated with poor workmanship or poor support from the manufacturer, unlike many other inexpensive models of competitors.

We got a really solid product, in which there is not a drop of superfluous, but to say that something is missing at such a price, the tongue does not turn. In our case, it is even difficult to find close examples for comparison, since usually the price is much higher. Of the closest ones, we can name and , but in neither case we will get the same support from the manufacturer, and the first is noticeably weaker, and the second is noticeably more powerful than ASUS MeMO Pad HD7.

In general, we used to get either more powerful and expensive, or cheaper and weaker tablets, but ASUS with the MeMO Pad line occupies an almost empty niche of "average" budget tablets, which can be recommended to those who do not want to overpay, but do not want to get a tablet that you will want to get rid of after a few hours of use.

We get a perfectly balanced gadget that has excellent parameters for its price and quite good against the general background, and at the same time is still an inexpensive gadget, which other manufacturers cannot boast of, who are forced to rely either on price or on differences from the "gray mass". Here, averageness is taken as a standard, everything good is taken from it and everything bad is removed. We saw something similar at, the same low price, the same characteristics that were average for those times, but the ease of use and versatility of use were at their best, despite the unpromoted company, the lack of an outstanding design, etc. They really wanted to use, as did the ASUS MeMO Pad HD7.

Advantages of ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7:

  • Reasonable price
  • Good features for the price
  • A large number of settings and powerful technical support from the manufacturer with frequent and large-scale updates
  • Great camera
  • Very long battery life and fast charging

Disadvantages of ASUS MeMO Pad HD 7:

  • No flash
  • USB charging only
  • Third-party programs are required for normal video playback

Last year seven inch Asus Memo Pad HD 7 was a favorite tablet by many. On its side were such chips as a bright display, long battery life, as well as a good software. In the new MemoPad ME176CX the design was updated, and the old processor was also replaced MediaTek, to a modern and fast Intel Atom. One can not help but praise Asus for the "clean" android vibe. But contrary to the innovations, the battery life has decreased slightly. Although, in general, everything is fine.

Design

Our test unit is black, but is also available in other colors: red, yellow, white and light blue. The front of the display is surrounded by a metal frame. The back of the case is made of matte black plastic. The plastic is not smooth, the fingers will not slip. Despite the fact that the tablet belongs to the budget segment, the body is made soundly. With bending and effort, the case does not creak or play.

At the top end there is a hole for connecting a 3.5 jack, as well as a USB connector. On the left is a hole for installing an SD card. On the back cover, at the top, there is a webcam, at the bottom, there is a hole for the speakers. On the right side there are volume buttons and a lock button. In our opinion, they are located not very conveniently, under the bevel. It will be especially inconvenient to use them when the device is lying on a flat surface.

The dimensions of the device are as follows: 188 * 112 * 9.4 mm, weight - 295 g. The new tablet is much smaller and lighter than Hisense Sero 7 Pro, whose dimensions and weight are as follows: 200 * 127 * 10 mm, 360 g. Memo Pad ME176CX outperforms in size and last year's version (196 * 119 * 10 mm).

Display

The tablet has a seven-inch IPS display with a resolution of 1280*800 pixels. The colors are juicy and bright, the viewing angles are excellent, almost 180 degrees.

We watched "Silicon Valley" in 1080p and enjoyed the bright and rich colors. Skin tones and hair color were accurately conveyed by the screen.

Asus claims that the screen is capable of delivering brightness levels of up to 330 nits. In our test, we achieved a maximum brightness of 271 nits, which is lower than Acer Iconia One 7 with 280 nits of brightness. In another brightness level test, the Asus Memo Pad (316 lux) was also behind the competition: EVGA Tegra Note 3 (451 lux) and Hisense Sero 7 Pro (369 lux).

In our test, the tablet can reproduce 81.9% of the sRGB spectrum. This value is slightly lower than the average value of 85%, but higher than the Acer Iconia One 7 with a value of 66%. In terms of color accuracy, the Memo Pad 7 achieved a Delta-E value of 6.1 (lower is better). This indicator is worse than the average accepted (5.4), but still better than that of the same Acer Iconia One 7 (7.3).

Sound

The tablet's stereo speakers are located on the back cover. In the Memo Pad 7 audio test, it was found that at a distance of 33 cm the sound was at 78 dB. The previously named EVGA Tegra Note 3 recorded 82 dB. For the average value, 79 dB is taken.

While listening to Gesaffelstein's "Pursuit", a slight sound distortion was noticed. The bass level was weak. But don't expect more from a budget tablet.
In the ASUS Audio Wizard application, you can select different sound profiles: energy saving, music, movies, games, speech.

OS and interface

Asus Memo Pad running operating system Android systems 4.4 s user interface Asus ZenUI.

With a quick swipe down from the top of the screen, you can bring up the ZenUI status bar with settings and notifications. But in order to switch between notifications and settings, you also need to swipe your finger, but this does not cause much difficulty.

The ZenUI shell works great in tandem with the operating system. It is good because it does not take up a large amount of memory and thus does not “slow down” the device.

Instead of the stock Android keyboard, Asus offers its own swipe-enabled keyboard. It can be adjusted in height, auto spacing, etc. We liked that this keyboard is larger than the standard one, but users can also install other keyboard options themselves.

Performance

Asus Memo Pad 7 is equipped with a quad-core Intel processor Atom Z3745 1330 MHz, one gigabyte random access memory, as well as sixteen gigabytes of internal memory, the volume of which can be increased up to 64 GB using a Micro SD memory card. When playing streaming video high definition We didn't have any problems, everything went like clockwork. Plants vs Zombies 2 didn't experience any FPS drop when playing games, and the game ran just fine.

In the test Geek Benh 3 the tablet scored 2431 points against 1061 points for the Acer Iconia One 7, which runs on a processor Intel Atom z2560 with a frequency of 1600 MHz. For comparison, EVGA Tegra Note 7 (CPU - Tegra 4 1800 MHz) scored 2523 points.
We also tested the launch time of the game. Nova 3. Asus Memo Pad launched it for 18 seconds, when on Acer Iconia One 7 it started for 24 seconds.

The graphics system in Memo Pad 7 was not weak. In the benchmark 3DMark Ice Storm Unlimited Asus scored 13625 points. Acer also scored 6042 points, which is very modest. As usual, EVGA took first place with a score of 16541 points.

When encoding video from 1080p to 480p, the VidTrim program was used. Video file size 204 MB Asus MX176CX transcoded for 5 minutes 35 seconds. EVGA accomplished this task in 3 minutes 53 seconds. Last year's Memo Pad 7 finished this coding in 11 minutes.

Heat

During testing, the tablet got quite hot. Most strongly after watching a 15-minute video, the area around the camera heated up. The temperature was recorded at 38 degrees Celsius. The screen warmed up to 36 degrees Celsius. We believe that if the temperature is higher than the temperature of the human body, then it becomes uncomfortable to work.

Programs

The Asus Memo Pad comes with its own suite of apps. Among them are such as, task list, music, file manager, Audio Wizard Clock, Weather and ASUS Web Storage.

We really liked the file manager. Through it, you can view files on the memory card, as well as files stored on cloud services, such as Google Drive, dropbox, ASUS Web Storage and others. In its own service, the manufacturer provides free 500 GB of cloud storage for up to two years.
In addition, Asus gives you the option to download 75 tracks from the Zinio kiosk for free, as well as six free mini-subscriptions and a $10 voucher.

Camera

The tablet is equipped with a 2-megapixel rear camera, as well as a 0.3-megapixel front webcam.
In good light, the rear camera can take good photos. But still noticeable noise in the dark and light areas.

The weak link was front-camera. You can see the colored band when looking from the bottom up. In general, webcam photos are blurry and inaccurate.

Video recording on the rear camera looks blurry. To improve the quality, there is stabilization. Without it, the video is shaky.

The manufacturer has installed many filters and improvements in the tablet. You can adjust the ISO sensitivity, exposure, white balance, color filters.

Offline work

The battery installed in the device has a capacity 3910 mAh. The manufacturer claims that the device can last on a single charge. up to 9 hours. When surfing the web, the brightness was set to 150 nits. In this mode, the tablet lasted 7 hours 39 minutes. As a comparison, one can EVGA Tegra, which lasted in this mode for 6 hours 51 minutes, Acer Iconia One 7 with work time 6 hours 32 minutes And Hisense Sero 7 Pro with result 6 hours 9 minutes. Given the cost of our sample, we can say that it deserves respect.

Conclusion

Stylish design combined with a processor Intel Atom Bay Trail make it attractive Asus Memo Pad 7 ME176CX in the price range up to $149. Although the battery life has decreased compared to last year's version of the tablet, but performance has increased significantly. Those looking for a faster tablet can take a look at the EVGA Tegra Note 7, but it's also priced higher.

All in all, the Memo Pad 7 is suitable for those who are looking for a small budget Android tablet.
