Complete review of BlackBerry Motion. Full review of BlackBerry Motion

The Blackberry Motion proved to be more than convincing in our test results, even if the iconic Blackberry keyboard is missing. Battery life is excellent, and the build quality is excellent too. However, the very wide bezels of the display no longer look quite modern. Fans of the brand will have to make some compromises, in fact, only in the field of photo quality, since there are even some cheap smartphones can offer more than the Blackberry Motion, which costs about 33 thousand rubles by the time it enters the market.

The new smartphone is not the first Blackberry of its kind. There is already a DTEK-series, which also has its drawbacks. As such, die-hard Blackberry fans with a soft spot for keyboards may be suitably disappointed with the arrival of the Blackberry Motion. On the other hand, all other users get a smartphone with excellent workmanship in typical Blackberry form, decent performance, fantastic battery life and rather mediocre photo quality. In addition, there are Blackberry applications on board that stand out especially in the area of data security and business comfort.

The disadvantage of the Blackberry Motion is its size, as the manufacturer surrounds the display with partly very wide frames, which does not look very modern. But the build quality here is excellent. On the reverse side the device has a soft but really durable plastic cover that is reminiscent of earlier Motorola models. Also, the case is waterproof. We also find a fingerprint scanner hidden on the front panel under the “Home” button to be practical.

Performance, display and battery

The Blackberry Motion is equipped with a mid-range processor called the Snapdragon 625, which has eight cores and a maximum clock speed of 2 GHz. Of the total built-in storage on the device, about 21.2 GB remain free for use. Accordingly, many users will immediately want to use the Micro-SD memory card slot. The RAM is quite large - 4 GB. Although this is not quite the level of such top models as the Galaxy S8, but in everyday life without abusing graphics-intensive applications, it will not give any reason for criticism.

Blackberry Motion: The build quality is superb

The Blackberry Motion screen measures 5.5 inches diagonally and is thus quite large. The manufacturer uses here an LCD panel with a resolution of 1080x1920 pixels. This means that the image clarity here is great, and even the color reproduction can compete with the characteristics of OLED panels, as the color space coverage here is 139 percent of sRGB. This is a wonderful result. But the maximum brightness here is only mediocre, since as a result of measurements we got only 355 cd / m2. When used indoors, this will not be a problem, but the bright sun on the street will significantly complicate the reading of content.

most strong point The Blackberry Motion is its battery life, as with its mighty 4000 mAh battery it managed a luxurious 13 hours and 44 minutes in our "online" testing. This is one of the best values in our respective ranking. By the way, according to this indicator, the model we tested outperforms samsung galaxy S8 for four hours. With the included power adapter, the device is fully charged via USB 2.0 Type-C in 2 hours and 28 minutes. These are good numbers too.

Despite the solid resolution of 12 megapixels, you should not expect too much from the quality of the resulting photos. Although the pictures still look great in bright light, the matrix does not cope very well with twilight lighting and is able to provide only a very low level of quality that is surpassed even by cheaper smartphones. In this case, the pictures lose a lot of detail and look somewhat blurry. In addition, a large amount of noise can be observed in dark areas. In general, the quality can be called normal for a couple of spontaneous shots.

Blackberry Motion photos: good quality in daylight

Blackberry Motion supports wireless standards WLAN 802.11n, ac and Bluetooth 4.2. With WLAN, you can therefore surf the net very quickly, but Bluetooth 5, which has a large range or data transfer rate, you have to give up here. However, in LTE networks, this mobile phone can operate at speeds up to 600 Mbps - it's very fast. At the time of testing, the smartphone was running the Android 7 operating system, despite the fact that Android 8 has been available on other smartphones for several months. Here, Blackberry, as having planted the word "Security" on its banners, should make an update as soon as possible. It is worth noting, however, that the security patch level is up to date.

Alternative: HTC U11 life

If the quality of photos is very important to you even when buying a mid-range smartphone, it would still be better to pay attention, for example, to.

At the beginning of last year, BlackBerry was already able to surprise the world community by presenting its unusual KeyOne keyboard phone. But she did not continue to develop technology in this direction and launched her new touchscreen phone BlackBerry Motion black 4g lte. It cannot boast of having a physical keyboard, but it would be desirable, because this could become its distinguishing feature, pushing you to buy a phone. As part of the review of the BlackBerry Motion smartphone, we will try to understand whether it is worth buying at a price tag of almost $500.

Specifications:

Options BlackBerry Motion

The smartphone comes in a regular cardboard box, inside which a charger is waiting for us, USB cable Type-C, paperclip, wired headphones and documentation.

Design

By its appearance, BlackBerry Motion is difficult to recognize from competitors. It looks like a typical modern phone, made in the shape of a black rectangle. You can recognize it by the Blackberry key located under the display on the front panel. This is perhaps the only feature by which you can immediately understand which company's smartphone you are dealing with.

On the back side you can see an unusual pattern, the body seems to be rubberized, although in fact it is a special overlay. In general, everything looks beautiful, and it is convenient to use it. The side faces are constructed of aluminum, which gives additional rigidity to the body. They were endowed with a special structure, which was often found in models released 2-3 years ago. Now they mainly use lacquered or chrome-plated side inserts.

The BlackBerry Motion review showed that it is, to put it mildly, large, because the Galaxy S8 + is comparable in size to it, despite the fact that it has a diagonal of 0.7 inches more.

On the left is a hybrid tray for nanoSIM and a memory card.

On the right is the volume rocker and power button. There is another button, the functionality of which can be set in the settings menu of your BlackBerry Motion phone.

Below is the main microphone, a standard audio jack, as well as an external speaker and a USB-C port.

Behind - a single main camera and a flash to it.

The space above the display is allocated for the conversational speaker, on the right side of which there is a notification indicator. There is also a standard set of sensors and a front camera.

The BlackBerry Motion screen is covered by the latest generation Dragontrail protective glass, which, according to the manufacturer, is even better protected than Gorilla Glass 5, which is now being installed on most flagships and mid-range devices. It is difficult to verify this statement, but during the review we tried to run the keys on the glass and the result is impressive - there was not a trace left.

The phone has an IP67 waterproof rating, but after water drops hit the screen surface, the oleophobic coating quickly disappears from it. This becomes noticeable in everyday use, when it becomes increasingly difficult to remove fingerprints. There can be only one way out of this situation - buy a special spray that restores the oleophobic coating.

The data sensor is built into the home button and works great. In addition, a text review of the BlackBerry Motion showed that it supports the ability to control gestures. With a light touch, you can return to the previous menu, and if you swipe down, the notification curtain opens. There is another interesting feature that I have not come across before - by pressing the “Home” button, you can take a picture on the camera. The most interesting thing is that the captured frame is hidden in a closed area. It can only be accessed with a password or fingerprint. These pictures are not found in the gallery and with cloud services they don't sync.

On the sides of the home button are two touch-sensitive navigation keys, although you can also use the on-screen ones if you wish. The manufacturer gives complete freedom in this regard, allowing you to use what is more convenient for you.

Display

The BlackBerry Motion has a 5.5-inch Full HD IPS screen. This combination gives 401 pixels per inch, which is very good, because individual pixels will be impossible to see with the naked eye. The aspect ratio is standard. It seems to me that the display lacks brightness, this can be observed in all latest smartphones manufacturer.

According to the developer, this was done in order to increase battery life, so the screen will seem dull to many. This is especially noticeable when you are outdoors, but everything is fine indoors. The frames around the screen are quite large, which is why it occupies only 71.26% of the total area of the front panel.

BlackBerry Motion Performance

BlackBerry Motion specifications are built on a mid-range Snapdragon 625 chip, which is complemented by 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal memory and an Adreno 506 graphics accelerator. 32 GB of memory will not be enough for many, so there is the possibility of expanding it via a microSD card. Specifications - this is the main drawback of the BlackBerry Motion, because they do not fit in with its cost. For the same price, you can buy a flagship for yourself, which is built on the top Snapdragon processor, has 6 GB of RAM and 64 GB of internal memory on board. In addition, it uses an aspect ratio of 18:9 and almost no frames. Obviously, this shortcoming simply does not give the BlackBerry Motion a chance to succeed, there are many much better devices in this price category.

2 sim review showed that k Of course the smartphone will do well with daily tasks and will pull even demanding games, but it does not justify its price.

autonomy

BlackBerry Motion dual sim the review acquaints with the fact that it has a 4000 mAh battery. This is enough for two days of autonomous use with an average load or a day of active use. The fast charging standard is supported, thanks to which from the complete charger it charges to 50% in 40 minutes and in just over an hour to 100%.

cameras

The review of the BlackBerry Motion camera did not reveal anything good, especially for the price the manufacturer is asking for. As the main sensor is used with a resolution of 12 megapixels and f / 2.0 aperture. In low light, it will be difficult to get a good shot. The picture is spoiled even at the slightest movement. This results in blurry and grainy appearance. The camera is suitable only for photographing in normal lighting conditions. Only under ideal conditions is it possible to obtain frames with impressive detail and natural color reproduction. It is not uncommon for a sensor to be unable to aim at an object for a long time. Even during the day, pictures are often blurry.

A selfie camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels usually takes pictures, and again it all depends on the lighting conditions.

Conclusion

The BlackBerry Motion black 4g lte smartphone does not justify its cost in any way, it is incredibly large. For the same price, you can pick up much better devices, the same OnePlus 5T or, which has now significantly fallen in price against the backdrop of news about. If the manufacturer does not reduce the price, then it will be a complete collapse. The advantages include moisture protection, good autonomy, user-friendly interface and display. Among the shortcomings - sky-high price, average performance and no cameras.

Your assessment of the smartphone:

Today we bring to your attention a review of the new BlackBerry Motion smartphone, which was presented at an exhibition in Dubai earlier this month. This time around, BlackBerry Mobile has begun rolling out the device from the Middle East, and in Europe the device won't hit stores until November. However, we, as usual, will stop at nothing to be the first to get a new device. So we think that our review will be the first not only in Russia, but also in Europe 🙂

We bring to your attention a video review of the new BlackBerry Motion smartphone:

For many, the BlackBerry brand is primarily associated with a physical keyboard, but with the release of BlackBerry 10, the focus has shifted to touch devices. It is no coincidence that the first smartphone based on the new operating system was the BlackBerry Z10, designed to demonstrate its capabilities. It is no coincidence that the first BlackBerry smartphone based on Android was the BlackBerry PRIV, a hybrid device that combined both QWERTY and a fully touchscreen smartphone.

Although TCL has already released two DTEK-branded touchscreen smartphones, they should not be taken seriously, both devices were released during the transition period, and their further development is not planned. Unlike the DTEK series, the BlackBerry Motion shares the same hardware as the commercially successful BlackBerry KEYone and is the first all-touch BlackBerry smartphone developed by TCL after acquiring the rights to the BlackBerry brand. So to a certain extent, this is not just another smartphone, but also a definite statement that can give us a hint of what we can expect in the future from BlackBerry Mobile.

With the release of the BlackBerry KEYone, we saw that the Android-based BlackBerry smartphone can be very interesting and quite competitive, and now let's see what the all-touch BlackBerry Motion has to offer us, how it can be considered the successor to the BlackBerry 10 touch smartphones, and whether there is a future at BlackBerry devices based on Android without QWERTY keyboard.

The BlackBerry Motion was known in development as the BlackBerry Kripton, which puts it in TCL's line of BlackBerry touchscreen smartphones, which are codenamed for inert gases from the periodic table. It was preceded by Neon introduced as DTEK50 and Agron released as DTEK60. Fortunately, with the release of the BlackBerry Motion, BlackBerry Mobile abandoned the vicious practice of putting the BlackBerry brand on models that differed from other TCL smartphones only in the version of the operating system, and developed the device from scratch. Thanks to this, the BlackBerry Motion has become not only the most secure Android smartphone in terms of operating system and hardware security, but also the most physically secure BlackBerry smartphone, receiving IP67 water and dust resistance.

What does this mean in practice? An IP67 water and dust resistance rating means the BlackBerry Motion is protected from accidental splashing into water. The device can withstand a single stay at a depth of up to 1 meter for 30 minutes. At the same time, the IP67 protection class means that the smartphone is not designed to work in water. Also, the device should not be washed under running water, as in this case, the water pressure may be too strong and it will get inside the phone.

In short, a smartphone should not be heated on purpose, and even more so, you should not use it in the shower or in the bathroom :), but if you accidentally drop it into the water, nothing bad will happen.

Personally, I liked the name BlackBerry Kripton, mainly because of the hint of serious cryptographic capabilities of the device, but the Motion sounds good too. Firstly, it reminds of the original name of the company - RIM - Research in Motion, and secondly, what is better suited for non-stop movement than a device that is not protected from water and dust, with a huge battery life?

BlackBerry Motion design

As for the design of the BlackBerry Motion, here, it seems to me, opinions will be divided into diametrically opposed ones. The design of the phone has several controversial elements. Let's start with the fact that BlackBerry Mobile has ignored all modern trends in smartphone design, such as the rejection of physical touch buttons, the screen in the entire front panel of the device, the aspect ratio of 18:9 and the dual camera module. In my opinion, there is nothing wrong with that. The same Google Pixel 2, presented almost simultaneously with the Motion, has an absolutely conservative design. It can be assumed that the shape of these devices emphasizes their purpose - to demonstrate the capabilities of the operating system - pure Android from Google and a modified secure version from BlackBerry.

The design of the BlackBerry Motion is based on a metal case made of aircraft-grade aluminum, consisting of two parts, the main one has a U-shape, and the second one covers the device body from above and goes to the back panel.

The design of the BlackBerry Motion has a fair number of design elements that refer to the company's previous smartphones. This is a rounded lower part of the case with a straight upper one, as on the BlackBerry Passport Silver Edition and BlackBerry KEYone, a chamfered metal edging, the profile of which resembles the original Passport, BlackBerry Z3, BlackBerry Leap and BlackBerry PRIV and of course the front panel, completely covered with glass, as on BlackBerry Z3 and BlackBerry Leap, and most importantly, the design of the back panel.

The back panel of the BlackBerry Motion is made of textured material with a Soft Touch coating that feels like rubber and is virtually invisible to fingerprints. I’ll make a reservation right away - this is not a composite material - based on carbon, like on the Z30 or Kevlar, like on the PRIV, what seems to be elements of weaving fibers is just a relief texture. In the center, the BlackBerry logo, in the upper part, also made of metal, a camera module with LED flash.

As mentioned above, the entire front panel of the BlackBerry Motion is occupied by Dragon Trail protective glass with a diamond nano coating to protect against scratches. According to the manufacturer, this glass is harder and more durable than the latest generation of Gorilla Glass.

Behind the glass is a 5.5-inch 1080p display. The display bezels are quite wide, no flirting with fashion. The display is almost flat, but there is a slight rounding at the edges. Above display front-camera, sensors and a speaker, and below it, physical touch keys for controlling the Android operating system, one of which, decorated with the BlackBerry logo, has a built-in fingerprint scanner.

As for me, I have nothing against phones that have a fairly large area of the case under the display. If you have to use the keyboard a lot, and not just scroll through cat feeds, this improves the phone's balance and makes typing much more comfortable. It can be said that BlackBerry is hopelessly behind the times by installing a physical button with a built-in fingerprint scanner on the front panel, while Apple abandoned it, but this decision makes some sense. The fingerprint scanner can also be used as a trackpad, which brings a certain amount of continuity to the experience for those who have already used a BlackBerry PRIV or KEYone. True so far, the number of gestures supported is not too large, a touch returns you to the previous screen, and a swipe down opens the notification panel. With one exception, the Camera app uses the scanner for other tasks. But more on that later.

The location of the buttons on the side faces of the smartphone has changed. All buttons are now on the right. At the top is the volume key, a little lower is the power/lock key, and even lower, in the center of the device, is the BlackBerry programmable key, which differs from the rest in a corrugated surface. The keys are made of aluminum, and are made on the same high level, as on all previous smartphones of the company.

Below is a speaker, a USB Type-C connector and a 3.5 mm mini-jack connector.

The BlackBerry Motion is slightly taller than the KEYone, measuring 155.7 x 75.4 x 8.13mm. The weight is exactly the same 180 grams.

In general, the device makes a very pleasant impression. Metal, glass and rubber. Everything is as it should be for a quality tool. At first glance, the BlackBerry Motion can crack nuts. According to the manufacturer, the new smartphone is designed for two years of hard use, and it is expected to retain its appearance throughout this period.

BlackBerry Motion Performance

I'm already tired of arguing with those who would like to get a BlackBerry smartphone with a top-end processor. BlackBerry Motion is designed for tasks related to communication, communication, work with documents. All those tasks for which the top processor is redundant. For that, the Snapdragon 625 has many advantages, the main of which is high efficiency. And 4 gigabytes of RAM makes it easy to jump from application to application.

BlackBerry Motion operating system

BlackBerry Motion is based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system, which we have repeatedly talked about in our reviews. It's the same operating system as the BlackBerry KEYone, and like the KEYone, the Motion will get an update to Android 8.0 Oreo next year. However, this is only important for those who love new features, as for BlackBerry security and software updates, they come out monthly and bring the latest fixes on the day the Android security bulletin is published and new features from BlackBerry.

In the past since the release of the BlackBerry PRIV - the first BlackBerry smartphone based on android time, stability and speed android work has been greatly improved, and in addition, BlackBerry has done a great job of optimizing the operating system. In fact, to date, Android has become the most advanced and reliable operating system, which is especially noticeable against the backdrop of massive stability problems on Apple's latest line of iPhones. BlackBerry Motion fully meets all the requirements for a modern business device. The interface is smooth, very fast and absolutely free of any lag or freeze issues. In my opinion, the latest devices are KEYone and Motion, this is not at all worse than smartphones based on BlackBerry 10.

Preinstalled BlackBerry apps

With the release of BlackBerry Motion, BlackBerry has continued to develop and improve its Android application suite, which is now complemented by new programs. This is new file manager, the Locker app, a gallery for viewing and editing images, a calculator with the ability to convert currencies at the current rate and convert units of measurement, as well as a weather application.

BlackBerry Launcher

Everything is simple here, in fact, appearance, this is a stock Android interface, with some features from the BlackBerry 10 operating system and additional features to increase productivity.

The first can be attributed to the notification system, the icon of the application in which there is a new message or notification is indicated by a red circle with a white asterisk - “Spark”, which has become a kind of unofficial symbol of BlackBerry 10. The second is the system of screen shortcuts - shortcuts. These shortcuts cover contact management, media management, device utilities and more. Shortcuts can be activated using icons on the home screen, and an additional custom key can also be triggered.

Of the new, but already well-known to users of Android-based BlackBerry smartphones, pop-up widgets are worth noting.

Each icon on the home screen, with three dots below it, offers a preview without opening the app. A simple swipe down or up on an icon temporarily opens the standard Android widget for that app. This allows you to easily access core features without cluttering your home screen with widgets.

Naturally, like any other, the BlackBerry launcher allows you to change desktop settings using application widgets, change the icon grid, wallpapers and icon sets, including two preset sets: BBOS style and BlackBerry 10 style, for those who can't handle with nostalgia. Another one new feature launcher - the ability to hide and rename applications.

Unfortunately, due to the design of the Motion, namely because of its physical touch keys, it does not support gesture control from the bottom edge of the display, which is familiar to us from PRIV and DTEK series devices. But instead, an additional key can now be assigned up to three various activities to choose from. These actions also use system shortcuts and are configured in a similar way.

In addition, the secondary key now supports four customizable profiles for home, car, office, and user profile, allowing for three different triggers that can be called home network wifi, car Bluetooth, appointments that sync with the BlackBerry Hub or the apps you use most often.

Another element of the interface is the "Performance" tab, which allows you to quickly see all important information from any screen. Just swipe to the center from the edge of the screen next to the shortcut on the edge of the screen and you can see all your latest messages, upcoming appointments, to-do list and favorite contacts.

Blackberry Hub

Before we talk about the BlackBerry Hub on Motion, in particular, and on Android in general, we need to draw a line between what the BlackBerry Hub was on BlackBerry 10 and what it has become on Android. On BlackBerry 10, the Hub was part of the operating system, sort of like a notification tray integrated with an email client. This was very convenient, mainly due to the architecture of the operating system, which supported the so-called application cards. That is, from any application, it was possible to open a page of another application, without launching it, provided that these applications have permissions for such an action. Being system application, Hub on BlackBerry 10, allowed from any notification or message to go to the card of the application that sent this notification, interact with it and return back. It was very cool, so all the developers who wrote applications for BlackBerry 10 sought to add BlackBerry Hub integration to their applications. On Android, app cards are not supported and the BlackBerry Hub has become just another app. Its main advantage is the magnificent mail client, which has absolutely all the functions for working with mail, familiar to us from BlackBerry 10, and many new ones that are specially designed for those people who have to handle a huge amount of email messages daily.

As for notifications from other applications, mainly social networks, then at first glance the Hub is useless and duplicates the functions of the notification tray, because when you click on a message or notification, it simply opens the application that sent this message. There you can reply to it, and pressing the "Back" key will return you to the BlackBerry Hub, while the application will hang open in background. It would seem useless? But everything is not so simple. The BlackBerry Hub on Android allows you to apply the same actions to messages and notifications from applications and social networks as to messages Email. For example, you can simply delete a notification and keep it in the app, mark it as unread, or snooze it for certain time, location, or until you have a connection to a specific network. In addition, thanks to BlackBerry Hub integration with BlackBerry Contacts, you can find all messages and calls from BlackBerry Hub in BlackBerry Hub. this contact, in all applications and in social networks. Agree, when you do not have time, it is very convenient.

BlackBerry Hub for Android has many different applications that include the most popular social networks and instant messengers. Here are some of the accounts you can add to your BlackBerry Hub: Twitter, Facebook, Facebook Messenger, LinkedIn, Whatsapp, BBM, Instagram, Pinterest, Slack, Skype, Viber, WeChat, Line, Kik, Telegram, Google Hangouts, BBM Enterprise, Facebook Lite, Messenger Lite, QQ, Signal, TextNow, Skype Lite, Zalo, KakaoTalk and Tumblr. And this list continues to grow.

Here are some tips to help you master the BlackBerry Hub:

BlackBerry Contacts

The Contacts app from BlackBerry is a really great way to organize your contacts. A distinctive feature is the combination of contacts from various applications. Other features include: remote search, recent contacts management that allows you to block recent contacts, and smart filters and contact groups.

BlackBerry Calendar

With BlackBerry Calendar, you can view and respond to meeting invitations directly from the BlackBerry Hub and make phone calls directly from an event reminder. Also, you can use voice commands Google Now to create appointments.

BlackBerry Tasks and Notes

The BlackBerry Tasks and Notes apps let you work more efficiently by creating to-do lists, notes, and reminders, or by assigning due dates. Of the features worth noting is the ability to use tags, formatting and synchronization with Microsoft Exchange.

Blackberry password manager

All BlackBerry Android smartphones come preinstalled with the BlackBerry Password Manager app, which lets you keep all your passwords, login details, and sensitive records secure, encrypted with AES-256 and protected by a master password, instead of which, on the KEYone, you can use the fingerprint scanner. Integration with the BlackBerry keyboard is especially convenient, which allows you to enter complex passwords with one touch.
In addition, you can use the BlackBerry Password Manager to create strong passwords and lists that you should keep encrypted.

Locker is a new application integrated into BlackBerry's Android operating system. Locker creates a secure area in the device's memory that can be accessed using a PIN code, password, or fingerprint scanner. Locker has integration with the BlackBerry application suite. For example, you can send any document or picture to a secure storage area using the Gallery app or BlackBerry's Files app, and the BlackBerry Motion Camera lets you save images to a private area right away. Files protected with Locker remain only on the device and are not synchronized with the cloud.

Search on a BlackBerry device

Device Search is a powerful application that can help you search for contacts, calendar entries, BlackBerry Hub email messages, documents, multimedia files, apps and more. Searching BlackBerry on your device also offers the ability to search remotely if the information you're looking for isn't found on your device. Just open Search on your device and start typing, as you type, the app will show you the available options. It's much faster than just looking for the right app, contact, or message.

Blackberry keyboard

Many people think that a real BlackBerry is necessarily a phone with a physical keyboard, but this, of course, is not the case. Especially for the BlackBerry 10 operating system, the company has developed the best virtual keyboard, and now, this keyboard with many new features is available on Android!

The main thing about the BlackBerry Keyboard is its ability to learn. The BlackBerry Keyboard remembers how you type, what words you use most often, and offers you hints as you type. In order to send a word to the set, you just need to flick up on the keyboard under the selected word and it will go to the text. And the more you print, the better the tips will become.

Gesture control also helps when editing text, a swipe to the left deletes the last typed word, and a swipe on the spacebar switches the layout.

Another interesting feature is word input using gestures, if you activate this feature in the keyboard settings, you can type a word by swiping from letter to letter, and when the program determines the word you want to type, just lift your finger from the keyboard to it went to text.

in number software features BlackBerry keyboards that have become available in latest update, now includes an extension menu that allows you to quickly navigate to emoji selection, dictation, precise cursor positioning, and a clipboard that saves previously copied chunks of text.

BlackBerry security features for Android

Here's what BlackBerry has done and continues to do to make its android version safe:

Reinforced Linux kernel: BlackBerry reduces the attack potential of Android with numerous security fixes and configuration changes.
Address space randomization: This feature encrypts system memory used by applications, making it difficult for attempts to hack the device.
Hardware root of trust: During the manufacturing process, BlackBerry uses a hardware root of trust that adds security keys to the processor on every smartphone. These keys help track and verify the status of each device - meaning that the authenticity and integrity of your device is guaranteed, as is the security of the data it contains.
Secure bootloader: Thanks to the secure boot process, you can be sure that only an uncorrupted BlackBerry-signed operating system can be booted. Each stage of the secure download chain confirms that the next component is completely intact before proceeding with the download.
FIPS 140-2 Memory Encryption: US government-approved government-grade encryption protects your personal information, such as photos or banking information, even if your phone is lost or stolen.
Release of timely security patches: Many popular smartphones put confidential information the user is at risk of being hacked due to a slow security update - weeks, months or even years after a patch is released. The release of BlackBerry patches is the fastest, which minimizes your vulnerability.
BlackBerry Integrity Detection (BID): A service that constantly monitors for events or device configuration changes that indicate a compromise to the device's security, and acts in real time if a threat is detected.
Security Research Team: World-renowned experts test the security of secure BlackBerry Android smartphones.

DTEK by BlackBerry

One of Motion's security tools is BlackBerry's pre-installed DTEK app, with which you can not only get a visual representation of what information and features your apps use, but you can also take action to restrict them by adjusting permissions.

All in all, DTEK is great for monitoring, controlling, tracking and getting your device's security rating information, but it's far from perfect. For example, DTEK is great for finding apps that check your contacts, access your microphone, track your location and more, but you should be aware that some of these apps do require access to these features in order to function and if you revoke some rights , applications will be simply useless.

Another nice addition is that BlackBerry's DTEK app now displays the date of the latest Android security update.

Battery BlackBerry Motion

The battery is what makes the BlackBerry Motion completely unique. This year, many A-brands have begun to reduce the battery capacity of their flagships and mid-range smartphones, which was made possible by optimizing the operating system. Android Nougat and more economical processors. Examples include Apple's iPhone or Motorola's flagship Moto Z line, the youngest of which, the Moto Z2 Play, is also powered by the Snapdragon 626 processor like the Motion. As for smartphones with 4000 mAh batteries, how as a rule, these are devices from Chinese brands, the increased battery capacity of which is offset by the lack of optimization of the operating system.

Unlike other devices, BlackBerry Motion received not only a large-capacity 4000 mAh battery, but also an operating system optimized for its hardware to achieve maximum battery life. Using the BlackBerry KEYone as an example, which, with a 3500 mAh battery, works on similar hardware for about a day and a half, with a declared operating time of about 26 hours, we can expect that BlackBerry Motion will allow you to use the device for about two days with mixed use.

Estimated runtime is 32 hours. Qualcomm® Quick Charge™ 3.0 technology allows you to charge your device up to 50 percent in about 40 minutes using a USB Type-C charger.

BlackBerry Motion Camera

BlackBerry Mobile didn't experiment with the BlackBerry Motion camera - it's the same 12MP Sony IMX378 sensor as the BlackBerry KEYone. The rest of the main camera specs remain the same as well - 4K video recording at 30fps, Phased Autofocus (PDAF), Quick Focus Lock, 6-element f2.0 HDR lens, Dual tone flash, 4x digital zoom, continuous and adjustable focus, face detection, image stabilization, panorama, continuous shooting, live filters, improved low light quality Low Light Enhancement. An excellent camera that really lacks the power of a processor to get the same result as on the first generation Pixel phones. But nevertheless, the quality of the pictures is at the highest level.

Front camera - also unchanged - 8MP fixed focus camera, F2.2, 1.125um pixel size, 84˚ lens field of view, photo and video stabilization, 1080p HD video recording at 30fps, LED flash, mode selfie panorama, improved low light quality Low Light Enhancement.

But in terms of the BlackBerry Camera app's software features, BlackBerry Motion has received two new features not yet available on other Android-based BlackBerry smartphones. The first one is the integration with the Locker app. You can use the camera in normal mode, but if you tap the fingerprint scanner instead of the on-screen button or the volume key, the photo taken in this way will go to an encrypted memory area and will not be available for cloud synchronization or other users, even if the phone turns out to be they have in their hands. In order to see an image protected with Locker, you need to put your finger on the fingerprint scanner.

The second new feature is the business card scanner mode, which allows you to scan a business card, and then either simply save it, or, by launching the recognition mode, immediately send it to the Contacts application.

A very interesting and useful feature for business users, the only thing, but sometimes, with a non-standard location and font, it crashes.

Summing up

In our opinion BlackBerry Motion turned out to be a very interesting device. It combines very high quality assemblies, premium materials, protection not only at the software and hardware level, but also at the physical level, as well as monthly security updates with the same regularity as Google's flagships. At the same time, this is a reliable workhorse that will not let you down at the end of a long working day, and, if necessary, will provide communication the next day.

Frameless Android smartphone with design elements and water protection. It is hampered by outdated components and a weak camera, but impressive autonomy can be useful for business people.

Pros of BlackBerry Motion

  1. Water protection
  2. Programmable button
  3. autonomy

Cons of BlackBerry Motion

  1. Unreliable camera
  2. Poor button placement
  3. Mediocre hardware components

As usual, the codename of the BlackBerry smartphone turned out to be more interesting than the final version. A touchscreen device called Krypton has become the BlackBerry Motion, although it's not such a terrible name as some of the previous ones like Priv, Passport, DTEK60. However, there is nothing particularly interesting in it either.

The same can be said about the smartphone itself, which perfectly matches the vision of this developer: a solid mid-range device that will not cause a stir and queues in stores.

Among the advantages of Motion are a capacious 4000 mAh battery, BlackBerry security software and some additional bonuses that may be familiar to other Android smartphones, but not to models from this manufacturer. These bonuses include support for two SIM-cards, touch screen with a diagonal of 5.5 inches and a resolution of 1080p without hardware buttons below it. Such a smartphone should have been released at the time of BlackBerry 10.

Price and availability of BlackBerry Motion

In the UK, the smartphone is priced at £399, with no word on a US or Australian release. In Russia, Yandex.Market shows the cost of 34,990 rubles. At this price, it will directly compete with models like , and, not much different from the price of a great one.

Average smartphone for work

The BlackBerry Motion seems more made for the average user than previous handsets from the manufacturer. Him affordable price, there is useful features from competitors, there is no large physical keyboard under the screen.

The developers have focused their efforts on those areas that are most important in the workplace, the rest of the components can be called just normal. They are good, but not amazing. These include a 1080p LCD screen or a 12MP camera, as well as 32GB flash memory and memory card support.

The main advantage of the smartphone is a large and slowly discharging 4000 mAh battery and enhanced security of the Android Nougat system. This should be useful to people in jackets and ties, as well as to the staff of the IT departments of companies. Since there is little interest in the BlackBerry in the consumer market, the decision to target a niche audience seems entirely justified.

BlackBerry Motion for smartphone middle category is surprisingly heavy. The aluminum frame around the edges adds weight, though the stripe at the back and the curves at the top are plastic.

The back panel has a pattern, the BlackBerry logo is made in silver. The logo also appears on the physical Home button on a massive bezel at the bottom of the screen, which also includes a responsive fingerprint scanner that can be swiped up and down to open the notifications panel. You need to make the gesture slowly, or it won't work.

With this size of the bottom bezel, it's no surprise that there are also touch-sensitive "Back" and "Apps" buttons on the edges of the Home button, which light up when used and then gradually go out. It's a bit annoying when reading on a smartphone electronic books, since page turns are counted as interactions with the device and the backlighting of the buttons lights up.

On the left edge of the case there is a compartment for SIM-cards and nothing more. The developers have placed all the buttons on the right, so you will often confuse the power button and the programmable button, which is similar to the touch.

If you give someone a smartphone with the screen off, they will definitely try to turn it on with the wrong button. Thus, the developers chose an unsuccessful design, one of the buttons had to be on the left.

Despite this, it is convenient to have a button with the ability to assign different actions and applications to it, namely, you can program three interaction options. It would seem that you can assign the launch of three actions at once on different presses, such as two quick presses and a long press, but in reality it happens differently. If you set all three actions, pressing the button opens a menu with three commands, which is no longer so convenient. For this reason, it is best to assign a single action.

Above the power button is the volume control, below are the headphone jack, for recharging and data transfer and speaker.

BlackBerry Motion Screen

The smartphone has a 5.7-inch IPS LCD screen with a resolution of 1080p and a pixel density of 401 ppi. It's a standard size with a standard 16:9 aspect ratio, the resolution is far from impressive, the technology isn't OLED, the clarity and quality are decent, but not the best possible. For this price range, this is normal, but the screen will not be a reason to buy this smartphone.

The screen is protected by a proprietary coating against scratches, it has a slight curve, which is hardly noticeable compared to the rounded edges. It leaves a lot of fingerprints, but the main problem is that it is slippery. If you put the device face down, very soon it will be on the floor. Fortunately, the relief on the back surface eliminates this trouble.

The brightness is at a good level, but the maximum value is not so high as to blind. The colors are quite saturated, but not too much, the color temperature is changed by the slider in the settings.

There's also the now-familiar night mode, which reduces blue light emissions at night. There is protection against water and dust IP67, although it is better not to check it.

BlackBerry Motion autonomy and recharging

Without a doubt, the main selling point of the BlackBerry Motion is battery life. It has a 4000 mAh battery that allows you to work for two days in a row. In 2017, on Android, almost no one can boast of such an achievement, as developers rely on high performance and large voracious screens.

In this case, the screen resolution is 1080p, although OLED instead of LCD would be nice. Daily work with a smartphone shows that the battery is discharged slowly. Even with a heavy load, by the end of the day the charge level remains more than 30%, and with a low load, you can not charge it on the first night and leave it on the second day.

Charging speed is also very satisfactory. There is no wireless charging, but there is a fast 3.0 standard that charges from zero to 50% in less than an hour, which is enough for a full day of work with email, instant messengers, calls, social networks, photos, videos and games.

As with other BlackBerry smartphones, plugging into an outlet produces a colored line that gets longer and greener as the charge increases. You can disable this strip, it disappears on its own when it gets dark in the room.

A test was conducted with HD video playback for 90 minutes, the screen brightness was set to maximum, services were synchronized in the background. By the end of watching the video, the charge level had decreased by only 10%.

This is even better than the result, which is discharged by 11%, BlackBerry Priv by 13%, DTEK60 by 20% and DTEK50 by 27%. This makes the BlackBerry Motion a great smartphone for work.

This smartphone will obviously not be bought for the sake of its cameras. They are good, but that's all. If you need to take a photo for work or shoot something else, this is fine, but for a trip to a resort, it is better to pick up something of a higher quality.

The main camera is pretty standard with a resolution of 12MP and f/2.0 aperture. There's fast phase-detection autofocus, dual-tone LED flash, and support for 4K video recording at 30fps.

The camera application is made in the spirit of BlackBerry. There is a recognition mode with different settings for business cards, PowerPoint slides, whiteboards and documents. For a working smartphone, these are all the necessary things, eliminating the need to type thoughts and ideas that come to mind.

The application starts up quickly, you can do this by double-clicking on the power button. The exposure still changes at the bottom of the screen, there is a manual shooting mode with various settings. Unfortunately, it's too easy to accidentally hit the exposure with a swipe across the screen.

The camera shoots quickly, but sometimes the pictures are processed for too long, during this time you can move the camera and the image will be blurry. To be sure, you need to take two or three photos, then to choose the best one.

In good light, the quality of the photos is good, although sometimes the highlights come out too bright. When the light is reduced, problems arise, the colors quickly become dull, the edges are washed out. This camera is clearly not intended for night shooting.

The front camera with a resolution of 8 megapixels is normal. There is no beautify mode, no Snapchat-style filters, although there are a few filters that are completely unsuitable for shooting a face.

Software

Despite all the failures of recent times, the BlackBerry brand still retains fans, who in this case will not be disappointed. Although the device runs on a more modern one instead, it has all the traditional BlackBerry software goodies, namely BBM, DTEK, BlackBerry Hub and a productivity tab.

The panel slides out to the right or left if you change this in the settings, it contains data from the calendar, contacts, to-do list and the weather in your city. This gives a complete picture of what you may need today.

The hub allows you to combine different mailboxes, notifications from social networks, texts, calls and other information in the feed. If you get a lot of messages, they quickly get crowded and you no longer want to look at them, but BBM is designed to solve the problem.

The rest of BlackBerry's improvements to Android focus mostly on security. There is a DTEK app that gives ratings and explanations on how to improve device reliability. There is also a Password Keeper like the LastPass app where you can't . Locker allows you to keep certain files under lock and key, more precisely protect them with a fingerprint.

Privacy Shade acts like a keyhole on the screen. It's a small resizable window, everything else is blacked out so that outsiders can't see it. By default, this window is rectangular, allowing you to read secret documents several lines at a time. This is an interesting, but not the most practical solution.

There's also a great BlackBerry keyboard, in this case a touchscreen one. It will take time to get used to the predictions of the words you type, but swiping up on the keyboard to select the predicted word and to the left to delete the word quickly become habitual.

Multimedia

It is unlikely that someone will buy this smartphone for the sake of movies and music, but a good Android device should be able to do everything, and in this case it is. The screen is quite adequate both in size and quality to be used for watching videos. The single speaker on the bottom does its job, although it is quite noisy at high volumes. The earphones included in the package are not the most comfortable, but they are quite suitable. Also, the device is able to cope with heavy games, but this is not a gaming smartphone.

You will be able to catch Pokemon without any problems and the battery will drain much more slowly than on other devices, but it is hardly worth playing racing games or other graphic-intensive genres, as freezes can start and the frame rate will not be the highest.

BlackBerry Motion hardware specifications

The BlackBerry Motion's specs aren't as high as you'd expect at this price point. It uses an 8-core processor, but it is a rather old Snapdragon 625, 4 GB of RAM. It would have been much nicer to see Snapdragon 626 or 630 chips, but previous BlackBerry smartphones were criticized for their high cost, so the developers decided to play it safe.

The Snapdragon 625 remains a capable processor that can handle multiple applications at the same time. If you work in social networks, use games, tools productive work and everything else, the device will not become much slower, switching between applications is fast.

Sometimes the smartphone slows down, especially if the WiFi networks and Bluetooth, but this does not affect the usability too much. The performance is more than adequate for the price, and it won't get in the way of getting the job done.

Conclusion

If you remove the manufacturer's logo from the case on many Android smartphones in the middle price category, it will be difficult to distinguish one from the other. This does not apply to BlackBerry Motion.

Here you will immediately see the corporate design, get access to software for safety and performance, which are the hallmarks of BlackBerry. Whether this is good or bad depends on what you need your smartphone for.

In general, this is a solid device with good value for money. There are no obvious shortcomings here, only a few non-obvious solutions, most of which will not affect the daily work with the device. Of course, no one would refuse a QHD screen, but you are unlikely to notice the difference by eye.

The BlackBerry software is the main difference from most Android skins, especially the productivity tab and software keyboard. The company is adapting to the trends of the smartphone market and offers water protection, fast recharging and.

The main advantage will be the duration of the work. The autonomy of this device is the best among all smartphones released this year. Although not everyone likes heavy and slightly clumsy mobile devices, for some, autonomy is above all and they are ready to put up with other shortcomings.

This smartphone is intended primarily for work, conferences, travel, e-mail, etc.
