Positioning

Russian presentation samsung galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 took place in May of this year, and the first tablet to go on sale was Tab 10.1. About the delivery time of the junior model, the company's managers evasively answered that, they say, it should appear by the end of the year. But we didn't have to wait long: on October 11, the largest mobile operator Megafon and the South Korean company Samsung presented Tablet Tab 8.9. So far, it will be exclusively sold for six weeks only in MegaFon stores. The cost of a 16-gigabyte 3G-version of the "tablet" is 23 thousand rubles, 32 - 27. At the same time, the buyer receives 3 months free internet. Let me remind you that Tab 10.1 3G + Wi-Fi will now cost you only a thousand rubles more.

Today's review is dedicated to Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 3G with 16 gigabytes of Flash-memory "on board".

Design, dimensions, controls

The appearance of the device is practically no different from the "big brother": a black frame on the front panel, a silver plastic edging around the perimeter and the part where the camera module with flash is located, a white glossy back cover. With the decrease in the diagonal of the screen, the dimensions also decreased (230x157 mm versus 256x175 mm), but the thickness remained the same - 8.6 mm. The device also “lost weight” by 112 grams (453g vs 565g). Personally, it seemed to me that the Tab 8.9 has become much more mobile: it easily fits in a small handbag and even in the pocket of a raincoat or winter jacket.

The tablet is assembled soundly: the case does not creak or play, despite the abundance of plastic parts.

Fingerprints cover not only the display, but also the back surface, however, traces are less noticeable on it.

On the front side there is a front camera and a light sensor, on the bottom end there is a proprietary Samsung connector and two stereo speakers, on the top end there is an on / off button, a volume rocker, a standard 3.5 mm headphone or headset jack, a microphone and a slot for installing a SIM card (in the 3G version), covered with a plastic plug. The main 3-megapixel camera and LED flash are on the back surface at the top. The rest of the controls are made in the form of touch keys "back", "home", etc.

Display

The screen diagonal is 8.9 ″ (physical size 193x120 mm), the resolution is the same as on Tab 10.1 - 1280x800 pixels (170 pixels per inch), displays 16 million shades of color, matrix type - PLS-LCD (one of the varieties of IPS-matrices - Plane to Line Switching), sensor type - capacitive with support for up to 10 simultaneous touches. The sensitivity of the touch layer is excellent. The screen is almost impossible to scratch with sharp objects thanks to the Gorilla Glass coating.

The viewing angles are maximum, but when the P7310's display is tilted, the image takes on a slight purple tint, and the brightness drops a little. If we compare the clarity of the picture, then it is clearly higher than on the Tab 10.1, and even more so on the iPad: pixelation is not noticeable at all. Brightness can be adjusted either manually or switched to auto mode, since the light sensor is located on the front of the tablet. It is tall, but somewhat loses to the tablet from Apple. In the settings there is an item "Screen mode". In it, you can adjust the color temperature according to three parameters: "dynamic", "standard" and "film". In my opinion, the first parameter gives too saturated colors, the last one leads to cold shades, and the average value is the most comfortable for displaying information. In the sun, the screen fades by about 50%.

The device has an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a compass.

Summarizing the above, I can safely say that the Tab 8.9 screen is currently one of the best on the market among tablets.

Below is a comparison of Samsung and iPad displays (right):

Battery

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 has a 6100 mAh non-removable lithium polymer (Li-Pol) battery (7000 mAh in the Tab 10.1). The manufacturer claims that a full charge should last up to 10 hours when watching videos and up to 72 hours of listening to music. These numbers are close to what I got in practice. For example, when playing HD movies at maximum brightness and outputting sound to headphones, the battery lasted for 8.5 hours (that's 2 hours more than on Tab 10.1), when playing music - up to 60 hours.

In general, I was struck by the data battery life tablet: in “normal” use mode (automatic backlight brightness, 3G Internet for about 3 hours and the same amount of Wi-Fi, watching an hour and a half movie and listening to music through the speakers for two hours, as well as taking pictures for about one hour) Galaxy Tab 8.9 worked almost 12 hours (2 hours longer than Tab 10.1). Even at maximum load (high brightness of the backlight, games, performance tests, etc.), the battery was discharged after 7 hours. When using only Internet surfing, the battery lasts up to 16-17 hours.

From usb tablet does not charge, and the mains will take about two and a half hours to fully charge.

Communication options

The tablet works in 2G (GSM 850/900/1800/1900) and 3G networks (HSDPA 850/900/1900/2100). HSDPA speed reaches 21 Mbps.

A complete “gentleman's” set is available: Bluetooth version 3.0 with support for the A2DP stereo profile, Wi-Fi a / b / g / n standards with the ability to “distribute” the Internet (“Wi-Fi Hotspot” access point) and USB 2.0 (proprietary connector) .

For additional accessories, such as a USB hub or keyboard, special adapters are sold. Yes, not very convenient, but Samsung, alas, followed in the footsteps of Apple.

Memory and memory card

The device has one gigabyte random access memory, but 724 MB are available, of which about 450 MB are free. Internal Flash memory - 16 GB. 32 and 64 GB versions will be available soon. Memory write speed reaches 10 MB/s. The device is not equipped with a slot for installing a microSD card.

Camera

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 has two camera modules: front - 2 MP without autofocus and with a large depth of field, main - 3.2 MP with autofocus and LED (single LED) flash.

The front camera shoots very well: objects look sharp both at 10 cm and at a distance of two meters. The main camera is good. The maximum resolution is up to 2048x1536 pixels. The color rendition is natural, the white balance is almost perfect, the picture clarity is satisfactory. Focusing is carried out by specifying a point on the screen.

Movies are recorded in 720p resolution (1280x720 pixels) at 30 frames per second: smooth brightness change, the ability to select the focus point. For example, the iPad 2 takes noticeably worse photos, but the video quality is about the same. By the way, the bitrate in Tab 8.9 has increased by 3 Mbps compared to Tab 10.1. This affected the number of artifacts - at 8.9 there are significantly fewer of them.

Photo Mode Interface: on the right - switching photo / video, activating the shutter, entering the gallery; on the left - flash (auto, forced on, off), switching to the front camera, shooting mode (single shot, smile shot, panorama, motion shot), timer (off, 2 - 10 seconds), brightness (from -2 to + 2), settings.

  • Focus mode (auto focus, macro)
  • Shooting Mode (None, Landscape, Night, Sports, Indoor, Sunset, Dawn, Text, Dusk)
  • Resolution (1024x768, 2048x1536)
  • Metering (matrix, center-weighted, spot)

Performance

The internal stuffing has not undergone any changes compared to the older model: the same NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform, a dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor with clock frequency 1 GHz and NVIDIA AP graphics accelerator with support for 2 x 4 MB textures.

I would not call the overall speed of work high, apparently, the unoptimized OS version 3.1 affects. So, virtual desktops move with a slight loss of frames, and when you install animated wallpapers, they start to slow down altogether. In short, the entire interface is not always displayed smoothly, fortunately, this does not affect the number of FPS in games and programs.

In addition, the Tegra 2 platform has a significant drawback: it does not “digest” video files recorded in various formats, codecs and resolutions well.

Quadrant Standart

Software platform, shell and menu

While many tablets have already been updated to Android version 3.2, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is still running 3.1. Actually, from here and all the "troubles" described above.

Samsung TouchWIZ is used as a shell. To activate the display backlight, press the power button. The desktop appears with a pre-installed screen saver, clock, date, information about missed events, battery charging, and WiFi networks. And to unlock the tablet, you need to drag the circle with the lock pattern to the side.

The following tablet controls are located on the screen:

  • bottom left - buttons "back", "home", display earlier running applications, "create a screenshot"
  • at the bottom center is an icon with an up arrow pattern. When you click on it, six shortcuts will pop up: "task manager", "calendar", "world time", "notes", "calculator", "music". Each of them in the running state can be moved to any part of the screen, moreover, on top of all applications (like windows in Windows)
  • bottom right: clock, battery indicator, Wi-Fi network indicator. If you click on the "clock", a small menu will open - this is a new notification panel with the ability to enable or disable Wi-Fi, GPS, sound, auto-rotate. There you can also adjust the brightness of the screen backlight and call up the tablet settings.
  • top left - Google search
  • at the top right - launching the menu with applications and a “cross”, by clicking on which you will be taken to the main screen settings menu (widgets, application shortcuts, wallpapers, options)

The default desktops are 5.

The menu contains up to 35 program icons in a 5x7 grid on one screen. With a long press on one of them, desktop thumbnails appear under the menu, where application shortcuts are dragged. Above the menu is a Google shortcut. Android Market, clicking on it will open the "app store".

Navigation

The tablet is equipped with a GPS-navigator. Its characteristics are the same as those of most "tablets". For all the time he worked with him, there were no problems. As applications for joint functioning with GPS, "Addresses", "Maps", "Locator" and "Navigator" are installed.

Messages

At the moment, Galaxy Tab 8.9 and 10.1 can only send text or MMS messages. Perhaps in the next firmware calls to cell phones will be available.

For typing 3 keyboards: Swype, standard android and Samsung. Functionally, they are about the same and can take a landscape or portrait look. To switch between keyboards, you need to click on the corresponding icon at the bottom right of the screen.

Applications

As with any Android tablet, there is an "app store" Android Market. I will list only those that are already installed in this model:

AllShare. Serves for transmission multimedia files to DLNA certified devices.

Email. Mail client.

G-mail. Email client to work with Google mail Mail. After adding the corresponding account, it is automatically configured to receive / send messages.

For those who like to play, I advise you to install the Tegra Zone application. It makes it easy to find games specifically for the Tegra platform on which the tablet runs.

Web browser

An excellent browser that supports bookmarks (up to 16), their synchronization with Google Chrome, Flash viewing and motion sensor operation (by touching the screen at two points and tilting the tablet, you can zoom in or out on a web page).

Multimedia

Music player

On the left are the options by which you can organize your music: albums, artists, genres, folders, composers, years. The list of albums, songs, etc. will open directly in the center. On the right - the player control system and the list of music files. If you click on the cover at the top right, it will expand to full screen.

Settings are located in the drop-down menu at the top right. You can set one of the presets in them: auto, rock, pop, jazz, classical, dance, live sound. There is a customizable eight-band equalizer (from 125 Hz to 12 kHz).

The volume of two stereo speakers is high: it is comfortable to listen to music and watch movies at a distance of up to two meters. The speakers are located close to each other, so the stereo effect is slightly less pronounced than on the Galaxy Tab 10.1. Headphone volume is also high, and the quality is one of the best among portable multimedia devices.

Supported music files: MP3, M4A, MP4, 3GP, 3GA, WMA, OGG, ACC, FLAC

Video

In the performance section, I already mentioned that the NVIDIA Tegra 2 platform does not cope well with some codecs, formats, and high video resolutions. For example, a regular DVD-Rip (AVI in XViD) or an MP4 file reads easily, but everything is bad with MKV and MPEG - the player refuses to play them. But Samsung provides the following list of formats and codecs that the tablet can play: 3GP, MP4, AVI, WMV, FLV, MKV (MPEG4, H.263, Sorenson H.263, H.264, VC-1, XviD).

Conclusion

I liked this tablet much more than its older model. Reducing the diagonal affected the weight of the device, the size, the clarity of displaying information on the screen for the better (since the resolution remained the same).

It fits easily in a small bag, comfortably held with one hand, for example, when reading books on the subway or watching movies while lying down.

If you do not pay attention to some shortcomings, which I consider non-critical, the device turned out to be excellent. As an owner of the iPad 2, I can say with confidence that the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is a worthy competitor, and among the Android "tablets" - the best!

Roman Belykh (

The Samsung Galaxy line of smartphones and tablets resembles a large but not very rich family, where younger brothers wear out the clothes of their elders. In 2017, Galaxy A smartphones received a case reminiscent of the top-end Galaxy S. According to rumors, in 2018 they will also get frameless screens. You can also make sure that the Galaxy J smartphones also “changed” from plastic to metal.

Tablet Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) from plastic to metal. We can say that in the Samsung hierarchy, it is closer to Galaxy J smartphones than to Galaxy A. In other words, it wears out the top design of two years ago.

Externally, the device looks quite neat and strict. There are no design frills here. We see all the same familiar rounded corners and edges. A step forward was the metal case, which protects the beginning from all sides, except for the front.

The front panel is usually made of glass. The accents on it are the silver Samsung logo at the top and the hardware button at the bottom of the display. It stands out as it is made matte.

There is also nothing super original on the back side. Silver company logo and a slightly protruding main camera lens.

As a result, the tablet does not cause negative emotions, but you also do not feel admiration when picking it up. Good quality, comfortable device.

Screen Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017)

The screen of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) leaves a double impression. The tablet has an 8-inch display. Its resolution is 800x1280 pixels, that is, the ratio is 16:10. At landscape orientation more content will fit vertically. At the same time, the pixel density of the display is 189 ppi.

The screen is made using IPS technology, so in general, everything is quite good with colors. But in comparison with smartphones, it clearly lacks clarity. It is clear that tablets with QHD resolution are not yet represented in this price category, but progress in the smartphone market has led to the fact that pixelation is still striking on the tablet.

The tablet has almost no screen settings. There is an automatic increase in brightness when going outside, as well as a blue filter. It can be turned on manually or automatically according to a schedule. At the same time, it is strange that the filter adjustment is called "transparency". There are no color temperature settings or other enhancers.

Now let's turn to the objective test data. We recorded the white brightness of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) at 429.89 cd/m2. The black brightness was 0.5 cd / m 2 - to be honest, it seemed to us a bit too much. As a result, the contrast does not reach 1000:1, but is only 856:1. I would like it higher.

The color temperature of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017), like all mobile gadgets, is too high. It is 8000-8500K. The colors will be cold, while they cannot be made warm and natural, like the more expensive devices of the Korean company, where there is a color temperature adjustment in the settings. In addition, we note the greater than the average for the market, uneven color temperature depending on the brightness.

The color gamut is traditional for IPS. It exceeds sRGB, again in the cold end of the spectrum.

Gamma curves only slightly deviate from the standard - a good result, there are no distortions in terms of brightness of shades.

The touch display of the tablet supports 10 touches.

In general, the screen is good, but against the background of Galaxy A series smartphones, it does not look as good as we would like.

Camera Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017)

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) received two cameras. The front has a resolution of 5 megapixels, the main one - 8 megapixels. Both cameras can record FullHD video. The main camera has a flash.

The camera interface is standard for Samsung devices.

The main camera on one side has a button for taking a photo and recording a video, as well as a preview window for the content that has just been shot. On the other side of the display there are three buttons: change the camera, turn on the flash and settings. Above the shutter buttons there is an icon with a face. It includes skin tone adjustments.

Swipe left to open the filter preview screen. Now they are divided into two categories. One set of filters is recommended for landscapes, the other for portraits. You can change the order in which filters are displayed.

Swiping right will open a screen with additional shooting modes. There is a professional mode, panorama, shooting with a wide dynamic range, etc. Download additional modes as in top smartphones, it is forbidden. But some of them can be placed on the main camera screen.

The interface of the front camera is organized similarly. Only the flash button is missing. Also, the face causes not just skin toning, but three tools: thinning of the face and enlargement of the eyes are added to the toning.

The set of filters for the front camera does not differ from the main one. Modes are noticeably smaller.

The settings of both cameras are the same, however, only the resolution and some interface things are selected here.

The maximum resolution of the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) is 8 megapixels. The aspect ratio is 4:3.

The quality of the pictures is very good. Available good photo even on cloudy days. The flash also works well for fairly close objects.

5-megapixel frontal shots are also obtained only with an aspect ratio of 4:3.

The front camera is clearly not enough lens aperture. It noticeably soaps, and with a lack of lighting, it unreasonably overestimates the sensitivity, which makes the pictures noisy.

The maximum video resolution of the main camera of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) is Full HD.

The front camera of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) can also shoot a similar video.

Connectors and controls

As usual, the tablet has few connectors and controls.

The front panel of the device has speaker, front camera and a slightly noticeable sensor window. They are above the display.

Below it is a matte hardware button, as well as two other Android buttons that are touch-sensitive. One could think that the hardware Home button is combined with a fingerprint scanner, but this is not so.

On the back of the tablet is the camera and flash.

The right sidewall carries the on / off button of the screen and tablet, as well as the volume rocker.

On the left side there is a compartment for a SIM card and a card microSD memory. That is, in fact, the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) can be considered as a huge 8-inch smartphone.

You need a key to open the compartment. It is in the complex. In an emergency, a paperclip or needle will do. Just in case, here is a video on how to insert a SIM card into the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017).

At the bottom we find a microphone hole, a loudspeaker (only one, the tablet does not have stereo sound), as well as a connector USB Type-C. Samsung is gradually transferring all its devices to the new standard.

On the top end there is another microphone, as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. It's nice that USB and headphones are separated. Using the gadget will be a little more convenient.

Case for Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) 8-inch tablet

There are a lot of offers for cases for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017). There is various options for any wallet.

A simple leather book with the ability to use the lid as a stand costs about 600 rubles.

An even more economical option is a silicone bumper for the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) tablet. It is offered for about 500 rubles.

Reinforced book for Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) combines the advantages of a leather case and a bumper, there is a stand. It will cost already 3500 rubles.

Specifications Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017)

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) received the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 platform.

  • Samsung official website.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) is a fresh tablet with Android 7.1. However, today the eighth version of the Google operating system is already relevant.

Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) received the Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 entry-level platform. This is a fairly popular chip in the low-middle class. Quite basic functionality is now provided by the Snapdragon 200 series. Snapdragon 425 is quite actively used for inexpensive gadgets. A dozen smartphones and tablets based on it have already been in our hands. The chip is fast enough, although there are not enough stars from the sky.

It has four Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.4GHz. The processor supports 64-bit memory addressing, which means it can work with 4 GB of RAM, but in the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017), Samsung supplied the standard 2 GB for this season.

Adreno 308 graphics usually handle most of the available and popular on Play market games, but also not enough stars from the sky. At the same time, the basic display resolution of 1280x800 pixels provides more than enough.

It is worth noting Bluetooth 4.2 and Wi-Fi 802.11 b / g / n. Tablets of this class are not yet supposed to support Wi-Fi 802.11ac. There is also no NFC.

16 GB of memory is the standard for 2017, but you need to remember that less than 10 GB is available to the user. Therefore, it is not superfluous to support microSD memory cards up to 256 GB, which, by the way, is quite a lot for this price segment.

We have already analyzed the display and camera in detail, but once again we note that the main 8-megapixel camera has a very good quality for tablets.

A 5000 mAh battery in theory should provide a very good margin of autonomy, given the economical Cortex-A53 architecture. True, the backlight of an 8-inch display will put a serious strain on the battery.

Finally, it is impossible not to pay attention to the fact that the metal case made the gadget very weighty - as much as 364 grams in our LTE version.

Performance Testing

As rivals, we chose a tablet with a 7-inch diagonal. It was released in the spring of 2016 and was then one of the most affordable in the company's lineup. It should be noted that, as in the case of Galaxy smartphones A (2017), the 2017 tablet shows a significant improvement over its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) easily beats its predecessor.

nice to see and great advantage in a browser test. Surfing will be comfortable.

The Adreno graphics are just twice as fast as the Mali-400.

In GFX Bench, the new tablet is also faster, although overall the result is not very high for both contestants.

Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) in Antutu

In AnTuTu, too, everything is very clear. The test is comprehensive, it takes into account the performance in games, so the two-fold superiority of the tablet in 2017 is not surprising.

Our standard set of activities, which simulates daily activity, ate only 12% of the charge on the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017). The 2016 model lost 18%, however, its battery capacity is noticeably less. Given the 8-inch diagonal, the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) has a very good result. The tablet does not have to be recharged every day, of course, if you do not play it for 10 hours.

Power consumption is typical for a tablet. Naturally, 3D graphics require a lot, but due to big screen high and consumption when reading and watching videos. I am glad that the tablet almost does not consume, playing music and in standby mode.

The power saving settings of the Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) are located in the settings item. Optimization. There are two saving modes: medium and maximum. Both involve lowering screen brightness and limiting CPU frequency. Additionally, you can prevent certain applications from running in the background.

Games for Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017)

The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) should score well in games. We have already tested this Qualcomm platform. True, perhaps not all games will start.

  • Riptide GP2: excellent, everything flies;

  • Asphalt 7: excellent, everything flies;

  • Asphalt 8: excellent, everything flies;

  • Modern Combat 5: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Trigger: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Trigger 2: excellent, everything flies;

  • Real Racing 3: excellent, everything flies;
  • Need For Speed: No Limits: works, but may slow down;

  • Shadowgun: Dead Zone: excellent, everything flies;
  • Frontline Commando: Normandy: did not start;

  • Frontline Commando 2: excellent, flies;
  • Eternity Warriors 2: did not start;

  • Eternity Warriors 4: excellent, everything flies;

  • Trial Xtreme 3: excellent, everything flies;

  • Tria lXtreme 4: excellent, everything flies;

  • dead effect: excellent, everything flies;

  • Dead Effect 2: excellent, everything flies;

  • Plants vs Zombies 2: excellent, everything flies;

  • dead target: excellent, everything flies;

  • Injustice: excellent, flies;

  • Injustice 2: excellent, everything flies.

As you can see, not all games started, but those that did not slow down. Snapdragon 425 practically does not limit the gaming capabilities of gadgets today. Only one rating was not the maximum.

ON

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) runs under Android control 7.1.1. Version Samsung Experience 8.5.

The tablet supports two main options for organizing home screens with and without an application menu. It is also possible, if there is an application menu, to display or not to display the corresponding button. It doesn't exist by default. The menu opens with a swipe gesture.

The Bixby assistant on a tablet has limited functionality. In fact, this is a tab with the user's schedule, weather information, suggestions for new content.

Also worth noting is the SmartLock function. The tablet does not have a fingerprint scanner, much less face recognition, but you can simplify its unlocking. The device will be unlocked when it is in a certain location, paired with a trusted Bluetooth device, can recognize voice, and also detect physical contact with the user: the gadget will be unlocked while it is being carried or held in hands.

A set of Google and Microsoft applications are standard for Samsung gadgets.

Yandex search is additionally installed.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2017) – good tablet middle level. It has an initial hardware platform, but its performance is enough for the Internet and for games. The gadget received a large battery, which can last more than a couple of days. The device also has a decent camera.

We like the design and the metal case, but the 8-inch metal tablet is a bit heavy. The Bixby assistant actually has a nominal presence. Smart Lock will make it easier to unlock your gadget. Children's mode allows you to turn the tablet into a toy, the only question is whether you are ready to sacrifice such a device.

The result is a universal gadget for all ages and wallets.

South Korean company Samsung has been producing tablets since 2010. Modern the lineup devices, called Samsung Tab, is represented by three main series that have screens with different diagonals and cover all price categories. The Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 16 Gb tablet considered in our review, in all respects, belongs to the average.

The company positions the eight-inch devices in this series as ideal for content consumption, reading and web surfing. It is most comfortable to use the tablet for these purposes in portrait orientation, so all the controls are located accordingly and assembled, for convenience, under the right hand.

Appearance and design

The body of the "A" series tablet is made entirely of plastic. The aspect ratio is 4:3. On the front panel, in its lower part, there are standard controls. The physical button "Home" and two touch, responsible for canceling the last user action and showing previously used applications. In the upper part of the front panel, under the company logo, there is a speaker. To the right of it is the front camera lens and the light analyzer sensor.

On the right side face are the power off and volume control buttons. Above them is a microphone with noise reduction functions. Closer to the bottom edge, on the same edge, there is an SD card slot. In the LTE version, next to it there is an additional tray for a micro SIM card.

On the bottom side are located in series: a speaker, a headphone jack, a microUSB power connector and a voice microphone. The left and top sides of the device are completely free and do not contain any connectors and controls.

On the rear panel there is a lens of the main camera protruding from the body, enclosed in a square frame and two magnetic mounts for the cover.

The model is budgetary, so the company does not indulge users with a variety of color solutions. There are always two standard body colors - black and white. It is proposed to give individuality to the product with the help of multi-colored branded covers.

Screen and dimensions

The overall dimensions of the case are 20.8x13.8 centimeters, the thickness is 7.5 millimeters. The device is lightweight, weighing only 314 grams. The screen is a TFT-matrix with a diagonal 8 inches and a resolution of 1024x768. The dot density at this size is 160 ppi. As a result, the image gets a pronounced "grain". However, the impression of a low resolution is smoothed out by good viewing angles of the screen and its color saturation. Unfortunately the change color profiles the device is not provided that in the dark time of the day tires the eyes.

The multi-touch technology used in the matrix supports up to five simultaneous touches, which is quite enough for use in gaming applications.

Fans of watching videos may not like the screen only for the black bars, which with this aspect ratio will always be visible from above and below, although the tablet is capable of playing most popular video formats out of the box, including in HD quality.

Camera

The tablet is equipped with a standard set of rear and front cameras. The resolution is 5 and 2 megapixels, respectively.. Given that the tablet is not the most popular means of creating photos, this is quite enough for most users. The main camera shoots video in HD resolution, 1280x720, at 30 frames per second.

There is no flash in the device, which limits the possibility of taking photos during daylight hours.

Operating system

The tablet runs on the Android operating system. By default, version 5.0 Lollipop is installed on the device, on top of which the proprietary Touch Wiz shell runs. Due to the popularity enjoyed by the SM-T355 model, Samsung, in 2016, released proprietary firmware with upgrade to version Android 6.0 Marshmallow. Not all flagship devices of the company receive such an honor.

Both firmware, both standard and updated, are well optimized to work with the hardware of the tablet and provide smooth animation in all modes. The device communicates with Smart TV and smart TVs, allowing you to broadcast the image to the big screen.

Hardware configuration

The "heart" of the tablet is a quad-core SnapDragon, clocked at 1.2 GHz. The Adreno 306 video chip used in conjunction with it, in comparison with its predecessors, is better optimized and consumes less energy during operation. The amount of installed RAM is 2 GB.

With the OS installed, with all applications, the amount of internal storage is reduced from 16 to 10.8 GB. This disadvantage is compensated by using SD cards. "Galaxy Tab A" supports the installation of up to 128 additional gigabytes of memory. Taking into account the implemented function of transferring applications to external drive this significantly expands its capabilities.

Wireless communication implemented on high level. In addition to standard frequencies, the high-speed Wi-Fi ac standard is supported, operating in the 5 GHz band. Samsung tablet Galaxy Tab A 8.0 LTE also supports and Mobile Internet at speeds up to 150 Mbps.

The Bluetooth module works on the most modern 4.1 protocol. Additionally, the tablet is equipped with an ANT + module, which serves to receive data from fitness devices. Both of these short range standards can work with smart home devices. The only drawback pointed out by user reviews is related to the operation of Bluetooth and ANT + on the same carrier frequency, which sometimes leads to loss of transmitted data packets.

Battery and operating modes

The device is equipped with a battery with a standard capacity 4200 mAh. According to Samsung, one charge is enough to perform the following tasks:

  • video playback ≈ 12 hours;
  • listening to musical compositions ≈ 4.5 days;
  • Internet surfing ≈ 13 hours.

Exploitation

During the operation of the gadget, a number of inconveniences are revealed that are due to the design:

  1. When working in portrait orientation, if the user decides to charge the device, listen to music and browse the Internet at the same time, the wires start to get in the way. To avoid their bending, the tablet has to be constantly kept on weight. Light weight allows you to do this, but nevertheless, long-term use in this mode is quite inconvenient.
  2. Some users complain about the quality of the cover's magnetic attachments. Not having a rigid grip on the tablet body, it tends to unhook at the most inopportune moment, which can lead to a fall and damage to the gadget.
  3. Talking on a device with a screen diagonal of eight inches holding it in your hands is at least inconvenient, especially when you are in a public place. You can't put it to your ear, and, therefore, in this mode you have to use it with a connected headset, holding the case with both hands.

Company bonuses

Competition requires Samsung to use unconventional methods. One of them, for many years, has been providing users with bonuses when they buy a new device. Periodically, the composition of the bonus package changes and depends, among other things, on the task that the device must solve. Together with the Galaxy Tab A, the user receives:

  • a six-month subscription to The Economist;
  • subscription to electronic version the New York Times, for a period of three months;
  • month, to download books in samsung app Kindle.

As you can see, all bonuses are related to the main task of the tablet, which is advertised by the company. Reading and web surfing.

For users in Russia, this set of gifts is practically useless. The printed publications and the reading application contain content in English.

Price category

As we have already said, A-series tablets are in the middle price segment among Samsung devices. The eight-inch "Tab", which has been on the market since 2015, costs about 17 thousand rubles for the version with LTE. Version without mobile communications cost two thousand less.

Given the characteristics that the tablet has, this is a very favorable price for a worthy product. Of course, the plastic case and not very good design do not create the impression of an expensive device. But, after all, a tablet is not bought for the sake of examining the case and blowing dust particles off it.

conclusions

In general, the Samsung device turned out to be successful. Given the low price and decent hardware performance, the eight-inch A-series tablet can be a profitable choice. It is ready for work immediately after switching on. Watch videos and listen to music in all popular formats right out of the box with this lightweight device.

If you decide to purchase a tablet for affordable price, with a well-balanced interaction of "iron" and software, the eight-inch Galaxy Tab A is a worthy candidate. The tablet is worth its money and is able to satisfy all the requests made by users to devices of this class.

At the moment, Samsung has established itself as a manufacturer of fairly high-quality, and most importantly, high-tech devices, in particular tablets. Fans of this company have long appreciated the functionality of the older Samsung models Galaxy Tab 10.1. This time, Samsung has released a tablet that has a more compact and convenient size, with the same high-quality display and performance - Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300. This modification of the tablet also has a 3G module, which makes the already compact tablet even more mobile.

Specifications

Design

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 by appearance very similar to its older 10.1-inch brother. The difference lies in the dimensions, which, as it would seem, do not differ much, but in terms of ease of use, these are “heaven” and “earth”. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 can be put into a jacket or jacket pocket, which is impossible with the 10.1-inch model. The weight of the tablet also has a positive effect on ease of use - the hands do not get tired at all, even if you use the tablet for quite a long time.

There are two color options - it's fashionable White color and practical black. The latter option will be more practical not only because of the color, but also thanks to the soft-touch coating that prevents the tablet from slipping out of your hands. In our review, we are considering a model with a white back cover, which is made of plastic, such a coating is more attractive in appearance, but fingerprints remain on it, although it is not difficult to remove them from the surface.

Around the perimeter of the tablet there is a silver insert that expands and covers part of the rear side around the camera. This gives the tablet an original look, and serves as a smoother transition between the white back cover and the black frame around the display. The side edges are slightly rounded, which gives the already thin tablet even more elegance and airiness.

The side edges are devoid of any ports and controls, which prevents the speakers from overlapping, or accidentally pressing the control buttons while working with the tablet. In general, the build quality and finishing materials are at a high level.

As mentioned above, the tablet is one of the best among similar devices in terms of size and weight. Its dimensions are 157x230x8.6 mm, and the weight is 465 grams.

Display

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has one of the best displays on the market. The touch capacitive display has a resolution of 1280x800 pixels. Given that its diagonal is 8.9 inches, we get a clearer and brighter picture compared to the 10.1-inch display of the Galaxy Tab 10.1.

A PLS-matrix is installed here, and although it is slightly inferior to the IPS-matrix, it still has excellent color reproduction and brightness. The tablet also has a light sensor, which works quite well and adjusts the brightness depending on external factors.

As for the viewing angles, they are also on top, even if you turn the tablet almost to the end, the image on the display will be readable.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is equipped with two cameras - front and rear. The front camera has a resolution of 2 megapixels and is used for video calls and communication via Skype. The rear, in turn, serves to shoot videos and photos, its resolution is 3.2 megapixels. Pictures taken with the main camera are of pretty good quality.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 is equipped with two speakers, which are located on the top of the tablet. This arrangement prevents them from overlapping hands while working with the tablet. The sound coming out through them will be quite loud, but not the highest quality, although by the standards of the tablet is very decent. In any case, it will be more rational to connect headphones.

Keyboard and controls

Like most tablets, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 doesn't have that many physical buttons. Of these, you can select the "rocker" of the volume control and the power button.

The main control is carried out by means of a capacitive touch display, and to be more precise, the software buttons. AT operating system There are four touch buttons in the lower left corner of the screen. There is a button to return to the previous window, a button to go to the main screen, a button that opens a menu with the last called applications, as well as a button with which you can take a screenshot. The menu button is located at the top of the screen next to the desktop settings key. It is very convenient to manage the tablet with their help.

As for text input, it is carried out using virtual keyboard with support for multiple languages. Getting to the right letter is quite simple, and erroneous clicks are extremely rare. By the way, the capacitive touch display supports up to ten simultaneous touches. But if you do not have enough controls for the tablet itself, then the options include a physical keyboard that connects via the dock connector.

Performance

Tablet running on operating room Android system 3.1 with proprietary shell TouchWiz. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 has five desktops to which you can make various shortcuts.

The tablet is based on the NVIDIA Tegra 2 chip, which is a system on a chip. It includes an ARM Cortex-A9 processor, GPU, media and DSP processors, memory controllers, and peripherals.

As for the processor itself, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 has a 1GHz dual-core ARM Cortex-A9 processor. This processor has a 1MB cache.

In addition, the tablet has 1024 MB of DDR2 RAM. Out of 1024 MB, 724 MB are available. The video chip GeForce ULP is responsible for graphics processing. In performance tests, NVIDIA Tegra 2 shows very good results, and when running real applications, the performance is also at a high level.

To store information, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 has 16 GB of flash memory. Unfortunately, the built-in memory cannot be expanded using a memory card, since the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 does not provide a slot for it. But even 16 GB should be enough for most applications that can be installed in the Galaxy Tab 8.9. We hope that more capacious versions of tablets or versions with support for memory cards will be available in the near future.

Ports and communications

As for communication capabilities, they are pretty standard. The Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 provides one proprietary 30-pin connector for physical communication. It is located on the bottom of the tablet. It is possible to connect a large number of various devices using other ports. For example, an HDMI adapter will be used to output an image from a tablet to a TV.

Also, the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 provides wireless modules - Bluetooth version 3.0, as well as Wi-Fi standard b / g / n. In addition, the tablet can be used as mobile hotspot access.

But the most important advantage of the Galaxy Tab 8.9 is the presence of a 3G modem, which provides access to the Internet in places where other wireless technologies cannot. But for the version with a 3G modem, you will have to overpay.

Battery

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 has a 6100 mAh non-removable lithium polymer battery. For example, in the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the battery capacity is 7000 mAh. But in terms of battery life, the 8.9-inch model is slightly ahead of its older brother. In playback mode samsung video Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 can work for about 9 hours, and in normal operation it will last for 2-3 days.

It takes two and a half hours to fully charge from the mains. It is also worth noting that the tablet will not charge from USB.

Conclusion

The main trump cards of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 are its dimensions and weight, as well as the presence of a 3G modem. The first ensures comfortable work with the device (your hands will not get tired), and the compact size allows you to carry the tablet in your pocket. In turn, the 3G modem provides fantastic mobility. Also, do not discard a good battery life and a quality display. The only rather unpleasant minus is the lack of a slot for a memory card, because this is not the cheapest tablet. But in the case of the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300, the price is quite justified, since the tablet does not have critical flaws, but has a number of fairly strong advantages.

If you are looking for a tablet of this size on the Android operating system, then the Galaxy Tab 8.9 P7300 will be an excellent choice.
