Tablets Apple iPad. Apple iPad tablets Mobile device batteries vary in capacity and technology

I confess honestly, to the elder iPad Pro I reacted with a fair amount of skepticism: too big, different resolution, high price, big weight. Therefore, I did not expect much from using the iPad Pro 9.7, given that I am not a designer and the product is clearly not designed for me. Whether my fears were justified or not, you will find out in this review.

Appearance, materials, controls, assembly

Apple has always been able to make beautiful things, just remember ... whatever: Macbook Pro, iPod Classic, iPhone 4/4s, etc. Of course, this statement is also true for the company's tablets. There was a major redesign of the iPad in the first Air, and now the new versions are getting only cosmetic changes. However, they do not get worse from this. The new iPad Pro 9.7 looks about the same as the same Air / Air 2, but with a number of caveats.

In this review, I decided not to list once again the location of the connectors and controls, since the Apple website has a wonderful and visual picture dedicated to them, so let's focus on the differences between Pro 9.7 and Air.

First, of course, the color. There was a version of "pink gold", it was she who I had on the test. What can I say, it looks beautiful, while not clumsy, however, it is clear that such a coloring is still more suitable for girls.

The back with antennas is no longer plastic, but also aluminum, only the white rim remains. To be honest, I liked the previous version more.

An additional pair of stereo speakers appeared, now there are not two, but four. And this seriously affects the sound quality. I'm not an audiophile, but even I can hear a significant difference in sound between the Pro 9.7 and the same Air / Air 2. In the Pro, the sound is deeper, the volume range is better, the separation of low and high frequencies. This tablet can perfectly replace your small portable speaker.

And on the right are the same volume rocker and nanoSIM tray.

As for Touch ID, the Pro 9.7 didn't get it. new version technology, however, according to my impressions, even the first generation of the sensor works fine.

On this, external differences, in general, end, but, of course, the matter is not limited to them.

Dimensions

As you can see, the dimensions of the Pro 9.7 completely repeat the Air 2, but it’s still worth talking about them in a little more detail. When I first picked up the iPad Air, I was surprised at how light it was. Then I couldn’t even believe that you had a functional Tablet PC, and not the usual "tablet" on which paper is attached. I chose the comparison not by chance, because in the hand that Air 2, that Pro 9.7 feel about the same as the same “tablet”. However, let's not forget that competitors are also not far behind in this parameter, pay attention to the dimensions of Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 9.7 in the table, they are even slightly smaller than the Pro 9.7.

Compared to iPad mini 4

Screen

Speaking from the point of view of the average layman, outwardly you are unlikely to notice much difference between the screens of Air 2 and Pro 9.7, unless you put them next to each other. But that doesn't change the fact that the display on this tablet is great: high level maximum brightness, natural color reproduction, no air gap, ultra-high resolution and many applications optimized for this screen.

In Pro 9.7 appeared new feature TrueTone, it analyzes the lighting around the tablet and, based on it, changes the white balance on the screen itself. The FaceTime camera is used for analysis. I saw a lot of rave reviews about this technology on the net, but it immediately began to annoy me because of the screen going into yellow shades. Interestingly, when you turn it off, you immediately notice how cold the white color rendering of the display is.

You can't see the difference in the screenshots.

The NightShift setting automatically turns on a warm color scheme in the late afternoon, so that at night when viewing information from it, your eyes are not so tired.

Another advantage of the new display is support for the extended DCI color spectrum standard instead of the traditional sRGB. In theory, the number of displayed colors increases by as much as 25%, in practice, you don't really notice it. interesting article about the difference between sRGB and DCI, a familiar poppy threw me, I recommend reading it (it's in English).

By the way, there is no 3D Touch in this tablet, which is a bit surprising.

operating system

The tablet is running iOS 9.3. We had a separate material devoted to all the features of version 9.x, if you have not read it, then I recommend that you read it.

Performance

Traditionally for Apple, all their new tablets and smartphones work just fine and very quickly in the first year, and the Pro 9.7 is no exception. Someone, of course, may be upset by the lack of 4 GB of RAM, but for most even design tasks they are simply not needed. If you upgrade from the first Air or earlier versions to Pro 9.7, you will definitely notice a difference in speed.

In productive tasks, the right central part of the back cover starts to heat up, this practically does not affect the comfort of use.

Offline work

The battery capacity is 7306 mAh, it is almost the same as the same Air 2, but the Pro 9.7 still lasts a little longer, I would estimate this difference at 10%. I suspect that the point here is a more energy efficient processor. If we talk about everyday use, then you can safely charge the tablet once a week with an average screen activity of one and a half to two hours. Charging time is about four hours.

Camera

To be honest, I don’t understand people who shoot on tablets at all, it looks terribly stupid from the outside, and it’s just inconvenient, but since there is such a trend, then let’s talk about the camera in Pro 9.7 in a little more detail.

It uses the same camera module as the iPhone 6S, only without optical stabilization. In fact, you can take pictures similar to 6s quality with one "but". Instead of the small display of the 6s, the Pro 9.7 has a huge high-resolution screen as a viewfinder, so when shooting in artificial light, all the flaws in the picture will be immediately noticeable, especially the grain or any fuzziness.

Pro 9.7 takes great photos in natural light, but in the room it shoots worse, keep this in mind. I didn’t have an iPhone 6s at hand, so the usual “six” participated in the comparison.

iPad Pro 9.7 iPhone 6

The resolution of the front camera has increased to 5 MP, if we talk about selfies, then their quality did not impress me much.

However, I can not help but note that on any iPad, including this one, the quality of video calls in Skype is simply wonderful. I don't know if I'm just praising Apple or the more optimized Skype for iOS, but the fact remains that making Skype video calls from an iPad is much more enjoyable than from other devices.

Video recording is carried out in a maximum resolution of 4k, it is possible to record slow-mo at a frequency of 120 fps FHD or 240 fps HD.

Wireless interfaces

By wireless interfaces no special changes - a complete set, but with cut off NFC.

Apple Pencil

The iPad Pro 9.7 came to me for testing with an Apple Pencil. We already had a review of this “pencil” by Eldar Murtazin, be sure to read it if you want to know more about the accessory.

I tried the pencil out of pure curiosity, it became painfully interesting why some reviewers praised it so much. When you first take the Pencil in your hand, you immediately want to draw something with it, honestly, I, for example, have never been an artist, I was not too lazy, I bought the Procreate application and started to “create”.

Any art begins with imitation, so for the test, I took two photographs of cats and began to make sketches. The first time I used a “gel pen”, and it turned out, to put it mildly, not very well.

And this was the original picture.

For the second sketch, I decided to use a pencil, and you know what? In pencil, even novice artists will get much better, I don’t know what this is connected with, to be honest.

The original image was found on the Internet

In general, I got great pleasure from Pencil, but I would hardly buy it for 8,000 rubles.

Apple Keyboard

Another accessory-addition to the iPad Pro. Firstly, let me be sincerely indignant at the lack of a Russian layout on the keyboard, I understand that this is due to the small supply of the cover in principle, but this does not make it easier for me as an end user!

But I really liked the keyboard itself, despite the short stroke, it is very convenient to use the buttons, largely due to the large distance between the keys. Erroneous clicks are minimal (if you own a blind input method).

And everything would be great if iOS 9.3 did not change language switching from the usual CMD+Space to Control+Space. Insanely inconvenient and completely incomprehensible why this was done. To hang a Spotlight call on a past combination? But personally, I switch the language more often than I use Spotlight. In general, the accessory is very niche, in my opinion.

Hint, if you are used to the Windows layout, you can switch to it in the settings

Oh yes, I also note that the angle of inclination in the case is not optimal for me, and you can’t change it, unlike laptops.

Conclusion

First, let's look at retail prices in the official Apple online store:

Looks invigorating, doesn't it? But before we get outraged, let's remember how much Apple is now asking for a 12.9-inch iPad Pro:

And now, against the background of the older model, the iPad Pro 9.7 looks much more affordable. At the same time, in my opinion, this tablet is much more versatile than the huge Pro 12.9. It almost completely repeats the popular Air, has the same display resolution, so there will be no compatibility problems, small dimensions make it easy to carry it with you anywhere, and for the saved 20,000 rubles you can either take an older version or buy the same Pencil and keyboard .

Key differences between Pro 9.7 and Air 2: improved processor, TrueTone screen mode and DCI support, four stereo speakers, boost battery life by 10% and new better cameras. But, to be honest, I would not recommend changing Air 2 to Pro 9.7, these are products of the same level, it is not worth spending money on a cosmetic upgrade.

For designers in need of a Pencil and tablet replacement, the Pro 9.7 will be good option. Everyone is now talking about what a good product this is for creative people, but let's not forget that this is, in principle, a very good tablet. Yes, because of its professional features, it costs more, so it does not expect big sales, but this does not make it bad, rather niche.

The mass consumer can always get an Apple iPad Air 2 or samsung galaxy Tab S2 9.7 if you prefer Android tablets.

Speaking personally about me, after using the Pro 9.7, I was once again convinced that I prefer compact eight-inch tablets. I wonder if there will be a Pro version for the iPad mini as a result, and is it needed?

The first impression of the announcement of the iPad Pro 9.7 '' depends entirely on the general attitude towards Apple. If the fans of the company immediately find a thousand uses for it and a million reasons why they cannot live without this tablet, then the skeptics again start talking about internal competition and glut model range. In essence, we are dealing with a "powerful" iPad Air 2; or with the "small" iPad Pro; or… Be that as it may, the time when Apple chose for us, providing one smartphone and one tablet, is irrevocably over. The line of i-gadgets takes the form of a line of MacBooks - soon, perhaps, we will already add a release date in the style of "early 2016" to the long name mentioning the diagonal and version (Air or Pro).

Being neither a fan nor an opponent of the Cupertino company, I can only say that the choice is good. Apple is slowly moving away from the path of artificial restrictions, and in the face of the seemingly strange “little big” gives us its very own universal tablet: Slim, compact and powerful at the same time.

Appearance and ergonomics

Apple iPad Pro 9.7, front panel: above the screen - front camera, below the screen - Home button

It is difficult to choose epithets when talking about the design of the next iPad. It's the same as the old one, only new. Buyers of the iPad Pro 9.7” will not be able to impress anyone by laying their new tablet on the table - it looks no different from the iPad Air 2: the filling of a powerful tablet is simply housed in the well-known thinnest and lightest case. Only a few details distinguish it. First, the camera. Secondly, additional speakers on the top edge of the case - the iPad Pro sounds much more powerful than the iPad Air. Thirdly, the pad for the Smart Keyboard on the left (or bottom in horizontal orientation) side.

The tablet is offered in four, and not three, like the "big" iPad Pro, colors: sacred "rose gold" was added to silver, gold, "gray space". Apple is very fond of this color - we recall that now even a MacBook (just a MacBook) is offered in it. The case of the new iPad, as always, is covered with metal at the back and a sheet of glass at the front. This gadget does not need changes in appearance - it is still one of the most beautiful tablets in the world, and I am still careful in my statements.

We copy the dimensions from the specifications of the iPad Air 2: 240 × 169.5 × 6.1 mm. Weight from the same place: 437-444 grams, depending on the type of radio module installed. Speaking of the iPad Pro as a replacement for a laptop, we get an additional trump card in the form of real, not relative, compactness. You use the iPad Pro 9.7 '' according to the usual scenarios - no one looks at you like you're crazy if you get such a tablet on the subway, and your hands don't get tired if you keep it on the weight for a long time, watching a movie on it in bed.

Apple iPad Pro 9.7, top edge: power button, mini headphone jack and two more speakers

With the fastened Smart Keyboard, he also “friends” much more willingly than before - the tablet does not outweigh the fragile fabric accessory, so placing the tablet on your lap and typing is no longer scary. But six months after the announcement of the first iPad Pro, Apple did not come up with a groove for storing the Apple Pencil, as well as a way to charge it, other than sticking it into the Lightning, every second risking hitting the pen and breaking it along with the connector.

A fingerprint scanner is built into the Home key, it works quickly and without failures.

A set of other accessories is standard: a variety of cases, Smart Cover and so on. It is very important that iPad Air 2 cases will fit here too, so if you decide to increase the capacity and switch to the iPad Pro, you won’t have to invest in accessories either. There is only one subtle point - in this case, you will have to sacrifice a flash for the rear camera, in old cases, of course, there is no slot for it.

No engineering miscalculations, as with Pencil charging: you don’t need to charge the keyboard, it is powered directly from the tablet through the connection pad; instantly recognized screen keyboard turns off; the item dedicated to the Smart Keyboard appears in the menu only when the keyboard is activated. Another thing is that in this very paragraph you can only change the type of layout, no additional settings.

The layout is almost identical to the regular layout for a MacBook or iMac, except for the block function keys and, as a result, the Fn buttons - instead of it, the key for quickly switching languages. Most of the combinations familiar to the Mac work here too - only the commands directly related to MacOS do not work; different operating system - different laws, you can find them out by holding Command for a few seconds.

Using the Smart Keyboard is a real pleasure, Apple knows a lot about tactility. The fabric coating is pleasant to the touch and does not collect fingerprints, the size of the keys is optimal, although at first it seems that problems are inevitable. And, most importantly, the buttons have a very fast and at the same time pleasant stroke. How Apple managed to do this on a keyboard case is a mystery, but the Smart Keyboard feels not too different from working on a regular Apple Keyboard with the added bonus of a rough, pleasant to the touch coating.

This is strictly an optional accessory and won't turn the iPad Pro 9.7'' into a full-fledged laptop, although it does add an extra dimension to tablet usage scenarios. The main limiting factor is the lack of Cyrillic engraving; if you do not own touch typing, it will be difficult for you to use the Smart Keyboard. And, of course, the price - the keyboard case costs this moment 12-13 thousand rubles.

Several new products have been added to the Apple online store. In addition to the appearance, the iPad line has been updated. The iPad Air 2 has been replaced by a new iPad with a 9.7-inch display. The company itself emphasizes that the new tablet demonstrates excellent performance, while it has a small but excellent display. We offer to evaluate specifications novelties. And, of course, we will tell you about the price and where and when you can buy a tablet.

The updated “tablet” replaced the iPad Air 2 model in the line of “apple” tablets, which was announced by the corporation three years ago. It is noteworthy that the new 9.7-inch tablet is slightly thicker than the iPad Air 2 (7.5 mm versus 6.1 mm) and even heavier (469 grams versus 437 grams). Otherwise, it is practically a copy of the Air, only with an improved “stuffing” under the hood.

It's just an iPad

And that's it. When you say "it's just an iPad", you mean one of the best tablets With good screen, processor-optimized system, nice body and sonorous speakers. In the end, it was Apple that "gave birth" to the tablet industry, so it can be trusted in this regard.

The iPad is a device for content consumption, and the new model is just made for regular users of Apple tablets. It's also great just for those who want an inexpensive tablet with good value for money. But for avid geeks, the iPad (2017) is not so interesting, because its characteristics are old. For them, it is one step forward and two steps back.

Comparison of iPad 2017 (left, bottom) and iPad Air 2 (right, top)

In fact, the novelty replaces the iPad Air 2, but the dimensions of their cases are almost identical. The 2017 model is slightly thicker, but in real life it's not noticeable. The iPad (2017) has the same wide bezels around the screen, the familiar aluminum panel on the back, and there are also magnets for smart cases (Smart Cover). Tablet does not support Apple Pencil branded stylus and is not supplied with a connector for connecting a keyboard. These "chips" Apple left for its iPad Pro.

The highlight of every iPad model is its screen. In the new generation, the display is very good. This is the one retina with a resolution of 2048×1536 pixels. But the matrix cannot boast of the True Tone function, which adjusts the picture to the lighting conditions. There are also no laminated and anti-glare layers from the iPad Air 2. If you look closely at the display, you will notice that it sits a little deeper under protective glass, than usual. All because of air gap. Therefore, the body has become thicker. This is good for repairs, but bad for overall screen quality.

However, Apple claims that the panels on the iPad 2017 are brighter than those on the iPad Air 2. In reality, it's hard to notice.

Another improvement over older iPads - Apple A9 processor. Apple's new tablet is quite fast, but not as powerful as the iPad Air 2 and nowhere near the iPad Pro. But the performance margin is enough for fast and comfortable web surfing, games with normal graphics like GTA mobile ports and movies in good quality. In general, Apple A9 is enough for daily consumption of content in various forms.

Unfortunately, the iPad 9.7 (2017) didn't get the cool stereo speakers from the iPad Pro, where they sit on two sides. There are also standard two speakers on the bottom side of the case.

Summarizing all of the above, we again come to the point that "it's just an iPad." These are tablets you can trust - they offer standard quality, speed and feature set.

The best price / quality ratio

You can buy an iPad (2017) in Russia at a price 24 990 rubles($329 in the West) for 32GB and Wi-Fi. To get a communication module with LTE, you need to pay 10 thousand rubles, and for the option with 128 GB - another 7 thousand rubles. Hardly anyone needs mobile connection in a tablet, but the extra gigabytes for games and movies are definitely worth it. According to statistics, the vast majority of tablets are used as a home small TV with applications, so LTE is useless.

Apple installed good price to this tablet. The company understands that no one needs expensive innovations in this category of goods. No one wants to pay a fortune for an iPad Pro unless they are professionals (although they are more likely to buy a Wacom tablet). Most people are willing to spend a reasonable amount on a working machine like the iPad 9.7 2017 to watch TV shows and browse their favorite websites.

Therefore, the tablet will certainly sell well. The same Samsung now has nothing to offer customers in this price category. The Koreans definitely missed the mark with their $599 Galaxy Tab S3 - not a solution for the mass market at all. It is very strange to release such a model in the conditions of tablet stagnation. But we will definitely see cheap ones. Galaxy versions Tab S3.

Is it worth buying?

I'll tell you what: if you have an old iPad and for some reason it annoys you, feel free to take the 2017 model. By upgrading, you will experience many important improvements in speed, compactness and image quality on the screen. If you switch to it from the iPad Air or Air 2, then this will already be a step forward and two back. Such users are not recommended to upgrade to the latest version.

Left - iPad with LTE, right - Wi-Fi only

Now let's divide the current iPad models by customer tasks:

  1. Buy the iPad 9.7 (2017) if you want a simple device for entertainment and browsing.
  2. Buy an iPad Pro for drawing and occasional use as a laptop.
  3. Buy the iPad Air 2 if you are a human microscope and the quality of the screen is above all for you.
Overall, it's hard to recommend the iPad Air 2 because the new 2017 iPad is much newer and will receive updates for about two years longer.

Fine:

Badly:
  • The screen could be better.
  • There is no keyboard connector.
  • Speakers on one side only.

Is the most affordable Apple tablet you can buy today. Let's see how it compares to the iPad Pro 9.7, which has several advantages over its more budget-friendly counterpart.

Apple's latest iPad came out without the hype that usually accompanies updates to the company's lineup, but that doesn't mean it's a completely unexpected tablet. While as of late, Apple's new tablet, which comes with the simple name iPad, supplants the 9.7-inch iPad Air 2 and positions itself as an affordable alternative.

Starting at $25,000 for the 32GB model, the new iPad is Apple's. Its price is below the 7.9-inch, which was previously considered the most budget offering in Apple's line of tablets. It also saves you about $20,000 over the entry-level iPad Pro configuration, making it the best choice if you are on a budget. But before you rush to the store, there are some compromises that have allowed Apple to cut the price of the new tablet. Read on to see how the tablets compare.

NewiPad vs.iPadPro 9.7: Design and display

In terms of design, you're looking at two similar and very attractive tablets. Both are made of high-quality aluminum in a unibody assembly from Apple, a Touch ID fingerprint scanner on the front, and a traditional set of buttons and ports on the sides. However, there is a size difference. Measuring 240 x 169.5 x 7.5mm (H x W x D) and weighing in at 469 grams, the new iPad is slightly thicker and heavier than its Pro counterpart (240 x 168 x 6.1mm, 437 grams), but most people probably won't notice a difference.

The main compromise is the display. And while both tablets have a 9.7-inch 2048 x 1536 Retina display at 264 ppi, you'll notice that the iPad's display looks different. This is because it is not laminated, does not have an anti-reflective coating, and also does not support an extended color gamut. Nor is True Tone technology, meaning the screen won't use a light sensor to dynamically adjust the white balance to make text more readable.

What does this mean in practice? Compared to iPad screen Pro, the new iPad's display will perform worse outdoors, likely to wash out in direct sunlight and tend to show less vibrant colors. If working outdoors is an important factor for you, you should choose Pro.

NewiPad vs.iPadPro 9.7: Processor, battery and camera

Under the hood, the iPad has a 64-bit A9 processor and an integrated M9 co-processor, making it faster than the A8 on the iPad Mini 4, but not as powerful as the A9X chipset on the Pro. From a practical standpoint, the performance difference shouldn't be too big. The A9 offers quite tolerable performance, this chipset manages iPhone smartphones 6S. In our experience, it still works great with iOS 10, with no issues, stutters, lags, or performance dips. However, if you're buying a tablet with an eye to the future, the A9X iPad Pro 9.7 should again be your choice.

The new iPad is expected to offer 10 hours of battery life for watching videos over Wi-Fi, but we're not ready to jump to conclusions until the tablet has passed. complete review with tests. For reference, the iPad Pro lasts 5 hours and 38 minutes while streaming video over Wi-Fi at maximum brightness. The older iPad Air 2 could only offer 5 hours and 15 minutes. We expect the new iPad to offer times in that range.

The iPad is equipped with an 8-megapixel main camera that can record video in 1080p resolution. The image it captures probably won't be as sharp or colorful as a 12MP Pro that also supports Live Photos, add True Tone flash and 4K video recording. The Pro's front sensor is better too. The tablet boasts a 5-megapixel front camera compared to the 1.2-megapixel sensor of the new iPad, therefore, on Pro is better selfie and video chat.

NewiPad vs.iPadPro 9.7: Software

Both tablets run iOS 10, so you won't notice much of a difference. The difference comes with additional accessories that you can install on the iPad Pro, including and . The new iPad is not compatible with them, so if performance is your concern, you should go with the iPad Pro. He has best performance among those available, which, however, will cost you more. Of course, the iPad will work with any standard iPad, and at $25,000, it's a significantly more affordable option, making it a great choice for the budget-conscious user.

The situation may change with the release.
