However, it quickly became clear that the thieves were completely uninterested in the user's data, which was destroyed by a remote command. All the thief needed was to reset the phone to factory settings as soon as possible, and then set it up to work with or without a new account.

Manufacturers have tried to improve existing system, adding the binding of devices to the user account and protection that would not allow such binding to be bypassed. According to statistics, these measures worked: after their widespread introduction, the theft of smartphones decreased by a very noticeable 40%. Let's agree: we are now talking exclusively about devices with Google Android, that is, with GMS services installed out of the box. The author is aware of the existence of Mi Protect and similar systems in Chinese smartphones and knows how to bypass them. With an unlocked bootloader, this is so simple that it is of no interest (and no, no response from the Xiaomi server is absolutely required in the case of Mi Protect).

So, the ability to remotely reset or lock your phone in Android appeared a long time ago, at the end of 2013. And, interestingly, this feature is not tied to a specific version. operating system(which can be both old and very old with no chance of updating), but is provided by Google Mobile Services (GMS) mechanisms and the Android Device Manager application.

No need to be surprised if your device works under Android control 5.1 or 6.0 and does not have such protection. Like many others android features, this is left to the discretion of the manufacturer, so they may or may not include it in their devices. However, manufacturers of the first and second echelons in the devices of 2015 and 2016 model years, as a rule, activated this feature. An important point: if the bootloader in the device is not blocked or can be unlocked, then any protection costs a few movements. We will not even consider this path, it is not interesting. Things are more interesting with models in which the bootloader is locked and cannot be unlocked by regular means.

First, let's figure out under what circumstances the protection works. I note right away that there is no specific option in the settings: protection is activated by itself when certain conditions match. So, if you have a phone running Android 5.1 or 6, then reset protection is activated automatically under the following circumstances:

The user has set a secure screen lock (PIN, password or pattern).
At least one Google Account has been added to the device.

As soon as the last of the two conditions is met, protection against hard reset. To disable it, it is not enough to remove the PIN code from the screen lock. It is important to note here that with the next security patch, the gap could have been covered, but whether a specific phone received it is never known in advance.
